Hello all!
Glad to be a part of this forum.
I have always been fascinated with the 1940s-1950s and admired the vintage style. I picked up this Peters Bros dress felt hat about 9-10 years ago. I wore it a handful of times, but it has spent most of its life in the box:
There was just something I didn't like about it. The brim felt really wide for my face, and I had always pictured a different style on the top portion.
I decided to do something about it - I marked it and cut about 1/4" off the brim:
...and then using steam reshaped the rest of the hat:
I have no idea if this styling is considered more or less authentic, but it is a little closer in my mind to what I imagined a post-WWII everyday hat would look like. The hat not only fits me better now, but 'fits' me better
Because the dress code at work is changing and I'm needing to move up as far as the dress code, it has inspired me to do some research and take some cues from the days gone by. I have lots of questions, but I'll save them for the search button to start - I'm learning a lot just by browsing. I am very inexperienced when it comes to hats, clothes, and anything about fashion (just ask my wife) but since I'm already a fan of the vintage era, it is pushing me to take the leap into this unknown world. If I'm going to dress up, why not do it with some style? I already have a smoking pipe and vintage lighter...I just need to keep working my way up.
Thanks to all for a cool place to hang out and learn. I'm looking forward to it.
