Hi there,

Even if I've been a silent reader for more than a year now, I decided to come out in and say hello.
I recently moved to US and my "fashion" sense is a little messed up so I'm catching up.
I'm still trying to figure out why people wear socks with flip flops/slippers and underwear with their swimwear :) Somehow, this doesn't fit in my mind.
But anyway, I'm here because I need some help in choosing a Panama hat for my husband. As much as would like, the grade system is not consistent and is hard to find the perfect hat. I'm thinking about a panama hat, wide brim but higher quality.
Stetson, Village hat and all other retailers, don't have details about their grading system. Stetson Grade 20 is an average or high quality?
I can't afford a Montecristi 60 count :) but still I would like something nice.

Any input on this?
Thanks

Yup. Easy one, m'dear! Check this guy. That's all you need, and your husband's a real lucky fellow with a great wife!! Good luck.

P.S. Start by searching the "In stock" items. You could save some serious money.

I would suggest Panama Hat Company of St. Augustine. You can find very nice hats for less than $100. They are dressy enough without expending lots. I have had one for quite some time now and it holds up well. I travel with it a lot as my much more expensive Brent Black hat I can't afford to lose or get it crumpled. I find the service in St Augustine very good.

Don't apologize for not understanding why a person would wear socks with flip flops. For men, a certain type of undergarment is helpful at times when wearing swim trunks.
As for the grade system, I have found it worthless. Make sure whatever you do get a Panama hat with a hat band in it.

As you may already know, your choices will be more limited in his size; I'm in that size zone, so I know firsthand. I have four hats from Panama Hats Direct, ranging from their top tier to the more affordable, and feel every one was an excellent value.

I'm a 7 7/8, and, boy, do I sympathize. Talk to Art Fawcett about his Milans: I have two and, living where I do, find myself wearing them all the time. The straw he uses is the original Milan straw from China and is simply unsurpassable in beauty when you see it in direct sunlight: a kind of warm golden, honey color. The best thing about them is that, unlike most Panamas that can start looking a bit shabby after several wears, Art's Milans seem to get more mellow-looking. You'll also get a perfect fit and a truly first-class hat.
