Well, as a fan of the old radio series as well as the 1966 TV series, I have to say that this new movie is something of an abomination! As you might expect from the casting of Seth Rogen in the lead role, this is not your classic Green Hornet story. This film is more like the Pink Panther movies than your typical superhero/ crime drama. The conceit of this movie is that Kato, the sidekick, is the real hero of the story with all of the brains and skills, while Britt Reid/The Green Hornet is more of a bumbling slacker who has never really accomplished anything in his whole life except partying and chasing women. Of course during the course of the movie we can expect The Green Hornet to grow into the superhero role that he imagines for himself. This is a far cry from the original character of Britt Reid, who was something of an athlete and scholar before he put on the mask of the Green Hornet to fight crime in his city. I suppose that this movie might appeal to the usual slacker crowd that Seth Rogen is popular with, but he is certainly not The Green Hornet material in my view!

Can't really blame them for the change. It's pretty much a prerequisite for the hero to undergo personal growth in an origin story these days. They are doing the same thing in the other "Green" movie next year, the Green Lantern. (Where it makes even less sense I might add).

Oh I have to disagree with you there. this plot goes far beyond "Personal Growth" , this story concept is absolute character assassination. This portrayal is the exact opposite of the character that has been established and loved for some seventy five years. Seth Rogen and company decided that there were not that many people around that remember The Green Hornet, so they were free to do what they wanted with the character. I guess we will have to see if he is right. But for fans like myself that know the history of the character, this film could not be more offensive. It would certainly be possible to do a fantastic origin story where the Green Hornet had to experience personal growth before he was fully able to be the hero, but this movie is just trashing a great vintage hero.

I suppose that we are lucky that Seth Rogen did not get the chance to do the same thing with the Lone Ranger movie. Let us hope that when that movie is made, they will be able to stay true to the character and the values that he stood for!

As for the Green Lantern, I think it makes sense that there would have to be a story of personal growth, after all just because you get a powered ring from a dying alien, doesn't mean you are ready to be a hero.

They've done the same thing to Sherlock Holmes in movies before. There is even one where Ben Kingsley plays Watson as the brains and Micael Caine plays Holmes as an idiot actor.
Seth Rogan got the part because it was one of the conditions of him beinng hired to write it. It looks like he was only familiar with the sixties tv show.
I still hope it will be better than the Doc Savage movie George Pal made.

One counterpoint to the origin story doubts is Casino Royale and the reboot of Bond. He wasn't the Bond we knew till the very end of not Casino Royale, but Quantum of Solace, it's sequel. Perhaps The Green Hornet has higher ambitions than a single movie? With the general success of superhero movies these days, and the number of them going on to sequels up to quadrilogies, the producers wouldn't be completely out of line for having a longer character arc envisioned.

I think that next to this, the George Pal Doc Savage movie will seem like a masterpiece! I am hoping that The Green Hornet will not suffer the same fate. If this movie bombs, we might never see a decent and faithful movie version of the character. Of course if the movie is a big hit, then all we will get is the Seth Rogen slacker version. I guess the best hope is that this movie does well enough to stir up interest in the character and we see a more faithful reboot in a few years. Kind of the way that they almost killed off the Batman franchise with Joel Schumacher's version of Batman and Robin, only to have Chris Nolan come along and masterfully reboot the series!
