My new Federation

RBH

Bartender
It arrived today, and like so many others I have read about it is somewhat large on my rather large 7 1\2 [60cm] head.
I placed the foam at the back and the hat fits quite well but still is a little big.
I really like the looks of this hat , and think from what I read that the hat will shrink down and be fine.
Can anyone give some long distance advice before I bash it, my plans were for a Young Indy style bash.

edit:
I just read over on COW that the sweats shrink really fast. SO I think tommorrow I will bash away. I will wear it in our really humid weather we have been having.
I will post pics soon!

Can't wait to see a pic, R. I have really been thinking about ordering a Fed, so I am very interested in your opinion of the hat.
Enjoy!!!!

Good stuff, RBH! Look forward to the photos!

As far as the sweatband goes, you should be on the right track. When I bought my Akubra "R.M." (Campdraft) in April, I deliberately got it a bit large to allow for some shrinkage. Bought size 60 and had to use sizing strips, as the hat was too big. By now, it has a completely comfortable fit -- almost as if it was custom made for me. A few weeks of wearing it, and you should be in good shape as it conforms to your noggin!

Cheers,
JtL

By advice, you mean on the shrinking process? Your bashing skills are sound, R, so you must have meant the break-in process and all I can say is that water and heat can be friends when we need them to be, but troublemakers when they have their own way. The wear-it-around in the humidity sounds good, and keeping it on til it dries, too.

Thanks guys!
Yeah Duck, I like this hat. When my Campdraft arrived the 60 fit perfect, this 60 is a little large. Other than that I love the 30's look this hat has.

JTL, that is what I have gleaned from post over on COW. Wish me luck!

Hey Dean Thanks man, with Akubra, open crowned hats they will exchange them... but not after you bash it. I think a little spray of water is what i will start with on my bash. If the lose YIJ does not work I will try again.

Out of 5 shots this is the only one that half way turned out.
Maybe this will hold everyone over till I get more and try for a few of me wearing it.

Brim down all around, and you are going very tall crown! Very nice :)
Those two 60s Federation (and deluxe) started out on me to be slightly large. But at time progress, they have been molding more and more into my head shape, and getting softer with handling also.

More pics, I am awaiting :fedora:

Can't turn down a turn-down brim like that!

RBH,

That looks great! The Young Indy look suits you better than Sean Patrick Flannery, whose hat is too big for him in the photos I've seen (I'm guessing the producers did that on purpose, to show that he was still "growing into" the man Indiana would become).

At any rate, a very nice alternative to the tight-pinched Indy!

Fantastic! What is the felt like after working it over? I like softness in the felt, but not too much. That crown is so goll dang big but beautiful...your bashing skill had served you well...it doesn't look over worked!

Thanks all!
The felt is not a soft as my Stratoliner but has gotten much softer as I have worked it over some.
I even ''gasp'' sat on it!
I am really liking the tall crown and the pinch. I have an Adventurebilt so I was not really looking for the tight pinch and think this one looks pretty good.

Here is the photo of the YIJ fedora that Steve Delk made for a gentleman a few years ago. I really like the looks of it, it has a wider brim and ribbon but the style fits the Federation fine.

I have worn this hat all day and I cant believe how snug it is now fitting!
WOW at this rate I will have to remove the foam very soon.

I'll vouch for the quick shrinking sweats, too ...
I got my new Fed delux. and a "Fedora" couple of weeks ago. They seemed very large, but I literally wore them just one time in humid weather with the foam, and then I was taking it back out!
