My new DM Akubra Adventurer

My new Adventurer came yesterday, and I gave it the usual Indy bash and it looks great. For those who are interested in comparing it to the Federation, the hat is pretty much as advertised. The big difference with the Federation is that the crown is 5.5" tall rather than 6". So its great for those who like the Federation but think it's a little too tall. The brim is 3 1/8" in front and back and 2 3/4" on the sides, so that is slightly wider than the Fed. The hat band feels like a slightly better leather than the Fed. Maybe its the one used on the Fed Deluxe. It only comes in one color, however: Mid-brown which is probably the same one available for the Fed regular. It's a dark brown that can go with black. The hat ribbon is a matching color of the same quality as the Fed.

This was my first bash (I bought my regular Fed from MK already bashed), but it went easily enough and I kept the hat dry. The brim seems a little stubborn but I'll keep working it.

Overall it seems like a great hat and the cost, after shipping, is about the same as the Federation. It came by post in a week.

Kaosharper1,

I have one in the mail now, does it have the same stove pipe crown as the Fed., did you use a shallow center dent like the Last Crusade or a deep one from the Raiders? I guess pictures would be best:)

Pictures coming

I wasn't sure people would be interested, but I'll post some pictures later.

I did the Raiders bash, so it was a deep crease and a tight pinch. That's the one I like, but the Last Crusade bash would look nice too.

I have a Fed DLX with the Raiders crease, got this one to try a LC crease and maybe a little brim cutting. I am more than a little interested, thanks.

I forgot to mention that it does have the same straight crown (at least it looks like it to me). It's just a half an inch shorter.

The DM site, shows the hat with the brim, front and back, sloped down. Is that the way the hat is meant to be? Or is it just how they happen to show it? I ask because I would want the front down, and the back up (you're typical fedora...I'm sure there's a term for it, but I don't know what it is). I'm interested in the hat, but I'm not about to go through reshaping the brim...I suck at it.

Oh, and not to :deadhorse, but...

Mustang.... seems to me you're talking about a snap brim. The Federation, like most traditional fedoras, comes with a brim that can be worn snapped up or down - the traditional manner of wearing this was up at the back and snapped down at the front. I believe that in all three films Ford/Jones wore his hat with both ends down. This can be achieved with a snap brim, and is probably what you see on the DM hat (assuming, height difference aside, it is otherwise similar to an Akubra), though it's also possible it's a non snap brim just shaped like that.

Picture upload failed

I tried to post pictures of both my Adventurer and Federation, but I can't seem to get it to work. I'll keep trying to figure this out.

Mustang,

It is not a snap brim, follows the same brim contour as the Snowy River or their outback hats. The Indy was not pulled down in back only the front, and the back was flat as if you had sat it brim down on a table. You have to work the brim to get it from turning down in the back. There are many who speculate that the HJ Indy in raiders was flat all around and only when placed on the head did it flip down in front and deform the brim. I have been working on mine since it arrived 11 Feb 08. With a lot of rolling the brim in your hands and keeping the front pulled down it will get a very slight and I do mean slight rise in the back. Have been wearing and tweaking it since I got it. Cut the brim down to 2 3/4 front and back and 2 1/2 on the sides. I think it will make a great weekend and after work hat but not in the same class as the Fed Deluxe. This all being said, I still like the hat a lot and if by some strange accident I lost it, I would not hesitate to order another or recommend it to anyone looking for a very well made hat.

Pictures at last

Here's the Adventurer (Left) and the Federation. This picture shows the colors best. The Adventurer is my first bash. What do you think?

Nice creases ... :eusa_clap

You can't tell from the pics if one crown is shorter than the other. Is there enough difference to tell in person?

You can when I have them on, but its pretty subtle. While the crown's are supposedly 1/2" different, the bash seems to only be about 1/4" different. So it may be the difference in the bashes. You can see the brim difference though. The Adventurer is 1/4" wider in the front and back and you can see that.

Both are nice

I have the Adventurer and I've "Indy" bashed it. I love the hat. I'm ordering the Federation, so it's nice to see them side-by-side. Thanks. Good hats, eh?

Ribbon Difference

I think the ribbons make a difference too. It makes the Federation crown look a lot bigger when its only a little bigger.
