My Grandma and Deanna Durbin

Hi all! I wasn't sure if I had shared this yet, so I thought I would.

When I was scouting for 30's magazines I ran across one with Deanna Durbin is on the cover. And that may be standard for a movie magazine, but it's special to me. See, my grandma grew up with Deanna Durbin. They used to play together as girls before she got "discovered". But back then she was Edna May Durbin. They used to have sleepovers at each others houses when they were about 12, and their family and ours was really close. Our family was very musical, with my great grandpa playing the guitar and piano, and others playing the mandolin and banjo. My grandma said that her childhood was very musical, and everyone could sing at least a little. Back then she and Edna May used to try to think up names for her once she became a star and Edna May thought that "Cherry Pip" would be a really nice name. I'm glad they chose Deanna instead! Since she was so busy making movies they didn't really keep in touch, and she ended up getting married, having kids and moving to "Germany or somewhere over there" as my grandma says. So I have descided to give her the magaznine once I read it through and take pictures so that grandma can have a momento.

Thank you for sharing that, Lauren. I think that your grandma will really appreciate you giving her the magazine... even though her and "Edna May" grew apart as they got older, it sounds like she enjoyed the time they spent together as children.

What a lovely family story...

I very much enjoyed reading that Lauren. What a lucky girl you are to have that type of story linked to your family. Any chance of photos of your mum (US=mom!) and Deanna? Thanks Lauren!

Wow! I wish! I don't think we have any, though. Thanks guys! I am really sentimental about family history and I'm glad to share!

What a fun story Lauren! I love Deanna Durbin--I think Mad About Music is my favorite. There's a harmonica playing novelty act, the Alps at her Swiss boarding school are clearly a painted backdrop and in one scene she's riding a bike and you can see that the inside of the pleats on her skirt match the fabric on the bodice of her dress; that's why I love 30s films! Gail Patrick and Herbert Marshall are quite good and Arthur Treacher improves any movie he's in for me. The Three Smart Girls series is good too.

Thanks for sharing that piece of family history, Lauren

Now I'll remember that every time I see a movie with Deanna in it! That's such a cool story.
