Most impressive collections ...

I happen to have quite a few old hats. There's an assortment of real honeys among them. And some dogs, too, truth be known.

But what I have just pales in comparison to what I see routinely posted by Douglas, for one, and rlk, for another, and Jimmy the Lid, for a third. In quantity and quality, man, these guys got the goods. And they seem to always be turning up other special somethings to add to their collections.

Several others here also have the eye and the desire and (one assumes) the wherewithal to acquire impressive collections. I just appreciate their taking the time and trouble to photograph those splendid old lids to share with us. They inspire, you know. And it's just great that the right people, those who understand and appreciate what sets a hat apart, are the ones to end up with them.

Hats off to you, gents. Keep 'em coming.

It is not easy get good hats, Congratulations¡¡¡¡ to all boys wich show us beautiful and incredible hats, I can´t say who is the boss, because much look fine, some remember me grandfather´s hats, some day I saw a San Remo by Borsalino and other a Chamois from german hats, Congratulation again¡¡¡¡

Don't forget about Dinerman's incredible range and some lower profile members like Garrett,Carouselvic,Tango Yankee and Lefty. ScottF has shown fantastic hats even if they only visit temporarily. Mayserwegener has wonderful examples we are seeing more of recently. Current bingers(I'm guilty ) are more obvious and those who show in the Dailys. I'm sure there are more hidden treasures we never see.

Do moths haunt your sleep?

It's happened to me. Most of my vintage hats are kept in vintage hatboxes (another odd obsession of mine), of which there are many around here -- so many that some of them haven't been opened and their contents shown the light of day in a year or more. Fortunately, only one hat I've ever owned (so far, knock on wood) has ever sustained any bug damage, and that was a fairly modern Stetson Open Road. A loss, but not a heartbreaking one.

There was a time when I thought the climate around here was hostile to cloths moths, as I had rarely seen much evidence of them. Perhaps it is less moth-amenable than other climes, but we aren't immune to the little buggers.

I set out pheremone traps about 6 weeks ago, and I continue to mash the odd moth. Surprisingly, the vast majority of them were under my bed (feeding on dog hair accumulations) and near a pile of old wool baseball hats in my closet - haven't caught a one in traps near the hats.

At some point, I assume all the male moths will be caught and the buggers will die out.

I appreciate the compliment, but I've never had more than around 12 hats. I just don't like having lots of anything.

So where do you score these traps?

I rarely see moths of any kind inside this place. But, you know, just because I'm not seeing them doesn't mean they aren't there. People can have a well-established infestation of all sorts of pests without ever seeing them directly. Seeing evidence of them is another matter.

That's the way it goes, ain't it? As standards get higher, collections often get smaller.

I'm sure there are hats around here I will never wear again. Why would I, when I have so many others that more befit my exquisite tastes, not to mention my extraordinarily good looks?

I'll be rid of those hats in time, I suppose. If I needed the space, they'd be gone by now.

More moth suppression suggestions

In my part of the Southern California desert we've been inundated with more moths than I've ever seen before. Do the pheremone traps or any other measure work consistently, or do I need to just keep them in boxes when not on my head? I swear they're getting in through my doggie door now! I've got a few more decent hats recently, including one from tonyb that rocks, and I'd surely like to avoid any damage. I would love to be able to keep more of them out where I can look at them, that's half the fun for me. Thanks, Frank

It is an honor to be put in such company. The fact is so many of us here have such fantastic hats hardly a day goes by that I am disappointed in what is shown. I unfortunately don't have Lefty's restraint nor ScottF's rigid requirements. I see it, I like it I buy it. Sometimes I win and some times lose but I always learn. Tastes change as do rotations so I am usually prepared for what I want to wear.

I see from the collections up for view that we all have specific tastes that we gravitate towards. The hats we get for research or interest are for that only and are hardly worn and often sold after we have felt them up so to speak.

If a collection was made from the best one hat from each of the members here that would be the show stopper and would rival the best museum anywhere on earth and would run the spectrum of type, color,manufacturer and era.

Yup. I've been known to buy a hat that doesn't fit, because the aficionado in me shudders to think what might befall the dear old thing if it fell into the wrong hands. So I buy 'em to preserve 'em, and perhaps pass 'em along to someone who truly understands why the hat is extraordinary.

True enough. We kinda got that museum, in a "virtual" way, anyhow.
