Morfelt Hats?

First off- Hi, I'm new here. I'm a hat fanatic, a curler, I go to loads of old diners, and have a magazine column about them.

Anyway, I picked up an old wool felt hat to bang around in at school, since I don't want to endanger my much nicer old dobbs and stetson. The hat's a morfelt, and looks pretty old, but the quality is pretty lousy. Anyone know anything about morfelt?

Also, last summer I found and bought a resistol fedora, with an intricate bow on the band, but it was on the back instead of the side. It's sewn on this way. Was this something that only lasted a few years, and if so when?

Thanks!

Welcome aboard Dinerman...you'll fit right in here!!
I don't have much history on Morefelt but have had many in my hands and was always anxious to set them free. They clearly were low ends hats ( perfect for really bad weather) so I used them for film rentals mostly in the past. The Dobbs rear bow was popular (somewhat) in the early 50's and was pretty short lived. I have seen them on 20's hats also but very rarely. I believed it was considered too feminine so it took a "special" guy to wear them. I personally like them but heck..I'm special. :)

Backbows...

From info gleaned here, backbows enjoyed a couple of periods of popularity, most recently in the '50s. They don't seem to be very appealing to current buyers of vintage hats, and as such, are relative bargains. I like them for a change-o-pace. Here's a look at my Stetson Royal De Luxe, which likely harkens from the early '50s:

I'm not much help on the Morfelts, though the ones I've seen were wool, and have not been attractive enough to entice me.

Morefelt was the old name used by Bollman Hat Co for their fur/wool blended hats . Today , they are called Dynafelt . It is a mixture of 90% wool and 10% rabbit fur .
