"Montana" Peak vartiations

Being one who has considered the "montana" peak a bit "over-defined" as a bash style, as if the tight crimp of the Span-Am War/Frontier Army era was not extreme in its own fashion, I got this image off the internet of a a US Army Air Service group shot circa 1918(?). I think it goes a long way to indicating that not all "montana" peaks are created equal, nor do thay have to be pyramidal, as many early types were. Actually many of these bashes don't look half bad for other than military headgear, I think. Of course no one is going to use one on their Borsalino, Stetson Royal, or one of a myriad of other fedoras. But...I could see an Akubra or two sporting one of these! And western headgear would be a natural. Let's see, maybe an Indy fedora could take one. Crown would be tall enough. Time for some experimentation!

Note how the overall crown height was higher for these 1911s than later.

FWIW, I've seen one photo where one of the soldiers has an open crown. I'm not sure if he punched out the dents and hadn't reshaped it, or what that would indicate.

Wouldn't you agree that there is crown heigth variation within the grouping? I'm convinced some are simply not as tall. And really, I don't think they look too bad, bad meaning like some of those witch hats you see in Span-Am War era shots where the style seemed to be evolving.Compare!

Span-Am hat

Just in case anyone is interested, last night on Antiques Roadshow there was a Span-Am hat that had all the campaigns written on it. Not in the best of shap with a couple of small holes but the appraiser put a tag of $900 on it.

 $900! Wow! I wish I knew what the original cost of production of that hat was, adjusted for inflation.

I call the third one in the back a Mule Kick.

Mike

My regular working cowboy hat has a "mule kick" also. That hat is of a type I favor, which seemed to be called a "pinch hat" when I bought it, but which seems to be referred to now as a "Gus" due to the film Lonesome Dove. I have a couple of them.

Following up though, is this a Montana Peak? It's a very nice hat, I like it. But I wonder if a Montana Peak requires four dents by sort of commonly accepted definition?
