Since I have the hat (my VS Dingus) and I have the MJK black bird (the real Dingus), I thought I should have a good copy of the movie. The deluxe DVD edition has the 2 earlier versions from 1931 and 1936. 1936 is a disaster. They tried to make it a comedy.
1931 is a great hat movie. The movie itself isn't that great. They didn't have the anti-hero, noir thing down yet but it was faithful to the story line. But the movie gives us a good cross section of 1931 style. Spade wore a center crease with a tight Indy-style crease in the front. He was the only one. Most others had side dents. But they did have the tall crowns and narrow brims that many of us seem to be tending towards these days. Good ladies hats too.
