Looking for a UK/Irish country hat.

I received a tweed trilby from scotwebstore today and wasn't overly impressed with the quality of the hat http://www.scotweb.co.uk/sr_glecr_BB60 a somewhat stingy raw brim, a bit tight (generic sizing) and not a lot of heft to the hat.

What I've been looking for is something like the following:

I found these two that look promising though the generic sizing turns me off a bit: http://www.berkeleyhat.com/noname9.html

Has anyone bought hats from either of these companies or might have a source for exactly what I'm looking for?

Enoch, Your links looks like what are often referred to as an "Irish fishing hat" or an "Irish walking hat". Have a look around for Hanna hats. Very well known and perhaps a little less expensive than Jonathan Richards. I have seen Hanna hats first hand and they are well constructed. There seems to be two styles of their bucket type hats. One is entirely "roll it up into a ball" soft and the other has a firmer crown. I prefer the firmer "keep it shape" crown myself. I found they were sized large. That may explain some of the difference in the price in the two links you posted. The Dubliner looks like the firmer crown model.

Have a look in the yellow pages or on the web for a "Scottish" or "Irish" type store near you. They will likely carry what you are looking for and you could see the product first hand.

Yes, thanks for your response. I have seen the Hanna hats website and that is one of the hats that I considered but I didn't know much about. I'm not overly impressed with what I got from the scotwebstore and will probably send it back or gift it (come Decembre).

To save postage and a poor exchange rate I'm tempted to try either of the U.S. links and the Richards does look rather luscious but, **********, it's hard to tell by a picture!

Thanks for the link mate. Those indeed are nice hats but the only problem that I see is that they're in a bucket style and wouldn't lend themselves to adjusting the crown with dent and such.

I have a flat cap made by this company. I picked it up at a thrift store for $2.00. It is a 7 1/8. It looks like they might use S,M,L sizing now but they have a size chart in metric and US sizes.

Actually, the Scotland Yard dick in that third picture is wearing a tweed bucket by my eye. That's an option but I've already a waxed bucket by Barbour.
