Hello! I've been reading and following the forum here for probably at least a year now. I've learned so much and figured I'm way past due to say hi and eventually start contributing something useful to the community as well. I originally found Fedora Lounge because of my interest in leather jackets and I have to say that the wealth of knowledge on the forum and helpful members here is really something special.

I'd had a couple of jackets from Coronado Leather that I'd worn for 8-10 years, and I was happy with those until I starting working out in an effort to get healthier; eventually those jackets no longer fit. I own quite a few small leather goods and bags from Coronado (their facility in San Diego), which are phenomenal, but their leather coats and vests are made elsewhere (Mexico) and not of the same quality in terms of design and craftsmanship. So I wanted to see what else was out there rather than just re-upping in my new size...hence I ended up spending more time reading here than I care to admit!

At least it was time well spent. I learned some tips to help achieve a better fit and found brands and styles that I didn't know existed. I was drawn to Aero, and settled on them for my jacket...and well, that quickly turned into 4 jackets. I'm not trying to dress exclusively in period-correct attire, but I do appreciate that Aero recreates vintage era styles. To me, many of them are timeless classics and I think they're very appealing.

And very confusing to order the right size! First Aero I got was the Pioneer model in brown CXLFQHH. I loved that design and it had just been discontinued, but I found a new one remaining in size 46. I himmed and hawwed about it, and my fiancee pulled the trigger and ordered it for me. I can wear some things in 46, but the Pioneer must be in a more relaxed fit/generous cut and it's just too big for me. I still have have it, and maybe I will sell it eventually. Even though it didn't fit I was blown away by the quality and hooked on Aero.

So I kept looking, armed now with a physical data point of how the Pioneer fit, measured, and my own measurements. In March I ended up ordering a 1930's Half Belt direct from Aero that they had in stock. It too is labeled as a 46, and being a much slimmer design actually fits great. I'd be happy if I had custom ordered it, but if I'm being real nitpicky I wouldn't mind an extra inch in length front and back. This one is also in CXLFQHH and it's in Black:

1930's Ben and Jerry's.jpg

I'm 18 Ben and Jerry's pints tall...because I'm American and will measure in anything other than the metric lol.

Just a couple of weeks after that I stumbled on for a deal that was priced too low to pass up...plus I now had some more confidence in what kinds of measurements should fit me OK. I love the classic car coat style and this will make a nice winter coat for me. Also in Black FQHH and coincidentally made by the same Aero machinist as my 1930's HB, although this one was a custom order for its original owner in Texas.

Most recently, and what prompted me to think about posting...with Aero's sale of 25% off stock jackets going on this week, I ordered a Long Half Belt in brown Pinnacle. Has not arrived yet, but I'm really looking forward to this one.

Great first post! And I like the 18 Ben & Jerry's pints height detection indeed!

Your beautiful '30's half-belt makes me want to go back in time to when I had purchased my own 30's Half Belt from Carrie in Seattle, when they still had their physical store. It was CXL Steerhide and I should have likely simply stopped at that point. Alas, time has passed, and so have a lot of jackets since then.

Enjoy the journey! :)

I agree as to doing anything to keep from measuring in metric. But it is taking over.

Today I went to the hardware store looking for a set of 1/2" impact sockets to go with my pneumatic driver. Grabbed a set of SAE sockets. Then I realized I didn't know if the lug nuts I was going to take off were standard or that silly metric. Had to by a set of metric to be safe. My tool cabinets and box on top have two sets of every tool–SAE and metric.

I'd looked closely at Coronado's jackets on their website, but the ones I liked were never in stock. Also seemed a bit too pricey for what they were. Made in Mexico of what looks like second tier leather, but just as expensive as a Vanson. Maybe it was just as well! I did end up getting a belt from them, which seems pretty good quality. The buckle (made in Italy) sure is nice, but the belt is not as thick as they'd advertised. Had I'd known it was that thin, I wouldn't have ordered it. (I like my leather belts super thick.) That's internet shopping for ya!

Haven't ordered from Aero so far. And thanks to the old dictator in the White House right now, might never get to order an Aero. I don't even want to think about the stupid tariffs that keep going up and down every day.

Those Aero jackets look great though. Congratulations! Hope that last one you ordered turns out just as good!

That was a great read, thank you!
Share some fit pics of the car coat as well :)
Wouldn't mind seeing the Pioneer either.

Thanks! I can't find any pictures of me wearing the Veste de Rallye other than a couple of ill-advised selfies...I'll have to take some better pictures when I get it out of the closet.

The Pioneer is a cool great design and I really, really wish fit me better. It's not that it's unwearable with a sweater, just oversized. If they ever bring it back, I would custom order one in a heartbeat. I will probably should move it on to someone who needs this size and will actually wear it.

Thanks!! And yeah the import fees definitely increased this time around. I just paid the customs fee to UPS and it was about $166...which is exactly $100 more than I paid to import the1930's HB in March this year!

I would say it is the patterning (and fit) and cost cutting in terms of leather utilization and assembly that make Coronado's jackets a poor value relative to what else is on the market. They're actually pretty transparent about the leathers they use for each item and its origin. Never tried a belt though, that sounds disappointing!

A lot of the leathers they use today are either from Horween or another tannery in Wisconsin for the bison (the name escapes me at the moment), neither of which I would call 2nd tier. Personally, I think Horween is one of the best tanneries in the world and I love a lot of their products; chromexcel and shell cordovan especially. I have a satchel (**cough** man-bag) made in the style of a vintage mailbag from Coronado made entirely of cxl (in green) and trimmed in shell cordovan. It's relatively simple style, but I think Coronado knocked it out of the park on this one. Same with the bags I have from them made from shrunken Bison and trimmed in Horween's Latigo. So I'd wholeheartedly recommend bags like these, made in their USA facility with leather of known origin. I'll have to take some fresh photos of them, but here's some stock pics:

No matter what, you can always take solace in fact that even metric sockets are still sold around the world with standard drive sizes (1/2 inch, 3/8 inch, 1/4 inch, etc).

My new LHB arrived finally arrived today! The Pinnacle horsehide is fabulous. This is going to be a very comfortable jacket to wear right out of the box. It's super soft and buttery, drapes well. At the same time, the leather still feels substantial and I like how grainy it is. Handling this jacket in person reminds me of Nick Horween on a podcast last year struggling to describe Pinnacle but saying that once you feel it, it becomes apparent that it's special. I have to agree.

One thing I'm not thrilled about is that Aero's listing said no knits, but this jacket has knit storm cuffs. Bummer! I really don't like them at all. Mistakes happen, but I probably would have ordered differently had I known. Other than that I really like everything else about it, especially this LHB pattern.
