Lipstick Chapping

I recently went and bought a tube of MACs Really Red. I love the colour, it's really complementing and popping. The only problem is it chaps my lips something terribly!!

How do you avoid this problem? Or solve it if you have to?

Is it a matte shade? If so, you might just need to switch to one of their creamier lines.

I always put lip balm (non-petroleum-based) on my lips before applying my primer, lipstick, etc. After blotting, powdering or whatever regimen you use, you can also use a little bit of matching lipgloss to help with the dryness.

How I've dealt with the dryer MAC colors:
While I'm getting ready I put vasaline on my lips. I do all of my makeup, hair etc. I then wipe the vasaline off my lips and apply one coat of lipstick, blot off, apply another coat and I'm off. If you leave the vasaline on you lips it's going to be a mess, so don't forget to wipe it off. I've found that since I started doing this routine, my lips stay hydrated throughout the day. I agree with KittyT too, topping it off with a gloss can be very beneficial.

I ALWAYS put on some Burt's Bees lip balm before I apply lip color. It works great and moisturizes... I you feel like your lips are dry then apply a tiny bit over the lip color. It wont make the matte shine too much. If it does just blot with a tissue. AND DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS!

Vaseline is also a petroleum-based product and anything petroleum-based will break down lipstick.

I used to use the Revlon matte line and found that I could never remedy the drying, no matter how conditioned my lips were or what chapstick I used underneath. B/ I use MAC now and find that the consistency is next to perfect if I put a little Blistex Deep Renewal on first. I usually exfoliate my lips with a toothbrush just beforehand. I put a little Blistex on, line my lips and fill them in with MAC liner, apply one coat of MAC lipstick, blot (partly to get rid of any sheen the chapstick might give), then apply a second coat. Stays lovely for most of the day. I usually only have to reapply after meals.

Now that I'm reading the thread, I realize I've never checked if the chapstick I use is petroleum-based, but it seems to work just fine. [huh] I tried Burt's Bees once and found it wasn't moisturizing enough.

I'm with Kitty on this one. I avoid anything with petrol based ingredients like the plague, regardless if it's for skin, lips, whatever. I've used Burt's Bees and Nivea with very little luck, but my favorite lip balms for the last couple years have been the Chapstick brand Naturals line and the new Fresh Effects. They hydrate the living daylights out of my lips, my lipstick always looks smooth, and no icky chemicals. All the rest of their products look to include mineral oil or petrolatum, which fall into my previously mentioned no-no category, though.

I'm a super chapstick freak. I have to have it all the time, I put it on a lot, and I have to have one in my pocket, my purse, my bedroom, my desk... hahaha. I use Blistex Complete Moisture and it is absolutely the best! Huge surge of moisture and I have to put it on a lot less frequently than other chapsticks.

Burt's Bees never did it for me. I appreciate natural products, but Burt's is way too waxy.

It turns out my mom had some Vaseline. I tried it. I got on my teeth, and was a pretty gross feeling. It did moisturize, but then the lipstick became chapped anyways?? Then started to almost flake off? I did wipe it off before applying the lip stick. Luckily this was an in-home experiment. I'm going to go get some different mentioned chapsticks and try those :D
