In 1939, LIFE photographer Charles Peterson took a series of photos at a jam session party in honor of record producer Harry Lim (who had just moved to the USA in 1939 and later became jazz producer with the Keystone label in 1943). And what a party it was, with the Duke, Cab, Billie Holiday, Bud Freeman, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and many, many more. Have a look:
