learning to sew?

My mom had a sewing machine, my STBX(soon to be x wife) has a sewing machine, and both are pretty handy with repairs and making things. I, on the other hand, send things to the cleaners when they need buttons replaced and have never sewed a thing. Any hints on how a ham-fisted guy such as myself can learn simple sewing? What items should I keep in a basic sewing kit? I'm trying to learn to be self-sufficient...
