What can I say? Had to phone in sick tonight - got a cold coming on. But this is helping more than a little. "Tokyo Story" was a real tear-jerker buy what a wonderful bit of film making.

I saw that Ikiru was on tonight, but I didn't watch it or record it because I already have it on DVD. That's probably my favorite Kurosawa film, I think. Tokyo Story was directed by Yasujiro Ozu, by the way.

I also watched Ikiru.

It was the first time I've seen it - even though the title's been on my mental too-see list for decades. Well... another beautiful, profoundly moving film by Kurosawa!

Ikiru is a wonderful film. It's been one of my favorite Kurosawa films for a while. Takashi Shimura is perfect in the role.
He is also amazing in Drunken Angel.

Tuesday marks the centennial of the birth of the great Akira Kurosawa, and Turner Classic Movies is marking the occasion by featuring a 24-hour marathon of some of his best movies.

if you're a fan, you know what an occasion this is; if you're not familiar with the great man's work, here's your chance to do some catching up.

The marathon begins at 6:00am. It's all worth seeing, but things really pick up with One Wonderful Sunday at 1:30 p.m. You could turn on the TV then and watch until 4 a.m. with no regrets whatsoever. It's one classic after another -- Drunken Angel, Stray Dog, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro -- followed by the marathon's finale, Dodes'ka-Den, Kurosawa's first color picture.

Here's the full line-up.
