.... I just wanted to introduce myself as I'm new here ( just registered yesterday) but have lurked for almost a year before registering ;) . I've worn hats since I was a teen ( my father ALWAYS wore one of his LBJ's or Peter Bros's. daily) and have continued for the last 40+ years now. Have worn mostly Stetson LBJ's ( or Open Road's as you would say here) and got my first Akubra back in the early '70s from David Morgan (a Bushman which I still have, dirt, moth holes and all) and have a new Bushman and a Squatter and waiting on a Stylemaster, all from DM, one of the BEST hat retailers, next to Peter Bros., I have ever delt with !
Was introduced to Panama Bob here and now have 6 of his Panama's :eusa_clap !(3 Montecristi's and 3 Cuenca's)
IMHO, Peter Bros., David Morgan, and Panama Bob have to be some of the BEST hat retailers I have ever dealt with!!
I live in the DFW Metroplex up here in North Texas, have 4 grandchidren and also collect Post-War Eropean fountain pens and Vintage Asian watches as well.
Am looking forward to joining in some of the great informative postd I've been reading here now.
Thanks;)

Wow, is that what happened? I had no idea about that. I just thought that every state has an Arlington. That's very interesting, Civil War buff that I am. When I think of Texas and the Civil War, I keep going back to a Hoyt Axton version of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" on a recent Civil War CD that is the best version of that song I have ever heard, last verse saying "the gallant Hood of Texas played hell in Tennessee." I wasn't a country music fan previously, and am a Northerner from Minnesota, but I can tell you I'm a Hoyt Axton fan now, and that version of the song pushes emotions to the surface every time, for some reason.

There's an intro thread for new members in the Observation Bar section of the forum. Your post was probably moved there. At any rate, welcome!

There were lots of families from Tennessee and Virginia....

... still here when i was growing up here and it was a MUCH smaller town! I still remember seeing some Civil War veterens riding in cars in the 4th of July parade here back in the mid to late '50s. And they ALL wore there old uniform hats and uniforms as I racall. In fact the College that was here then ( Arlington State College which is now The University of Texas at Arlington) were known as The Rebels at that time lol

Man, you just had to go and mention Hoyt Axton. It's just so sad that he's been gone all these years. Almost makes we wanna cry.

There was a mensch for ya, the real deal. I just loved the guy's sensibilities, on both his own tunes (which were many, and many of which were made famous by others) and on the stuff he covered.

Saw him perform once, back in nineteen seventy something, when he opened for another act, the name of which I'm not absolutely certain of (Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, perhaps?), seeing how it's been so long ago now, and seeing how Hoyt was, in my view, the real star of the show. Can't say that I had even heard much about him prior to that, but he made a fan of me.

Here's "Yellow Rose of Texas" ...

And a lovely little tune that way too few people have ever heard, called "Gypsy Moth" ...

Oh, and nice to have you here, monbla256. Sounds like you'll find kindred spirits here.

EDIT: Oh, what the heck, how 'bout one you know you've heard and liked but couldn't quite put your finger on just who to credit for it. It's called "Evangelina" ...

Yup, that's the exact one. Still does the trick. Great to see a video instead of just the song. He has a great voice, I never knew about it. I am a big fan of bass voices, being a garden-variety bass myself. I wasn't aware he had died, either, so that tells you how much I know. I'm going to have to buy some of his CDs. There's a lot of power in him, which makes me want to explore his work further.

Just to further hijack monbla256's thread ...

Hoyt's mother, Mae Boren Axton, wrote a tune called "Heartbreak Hotel." Perhaps you've heard of it. One of those greasy-haired rock 'n' roll boys had a hit with it way back when.

I love Hoyt Axton, I remember seeing him on a talk show in the 80's and I believe he said his mother wrote Heartbreak Hotel. I do know he wrote "Joy To The World" and "The Pusher", recorded by Three Dog Night and Steppenwolf, respectively..

I had a album of his that had a song called "Greasy Grit Gravy" , it was hilarious!
