JOLIET -- Shining columns rise into heavens of gold, a celestial dome full of sculpted intricacy. The Duchess chandelier is a sun ruling the sky, dominating the heights of the rotunda inside the Rialto Square Theatre.

This place is known as the Jewel of Joliet, from the cream-colored marble walls of the lobby to the cherubim who flutter into the midnight beauty of the auditorium.

With a $5 million campaign continuing into 2008, leaders are working to again restore the original opulence of the Rialto, which opened in 1926 and was restored in the early 1980s. Donations still are needed to hit the financial mark, even though work already has begun on the theater and results are visible.

Some projects will accent the ancient themes of the Rialto's grandeur. Other projects are adding a digital edge to the theater's hidden inner workings, ushering in 21st-century production technology.

It's great to see another theater being restored instead of split and turned into a multiplex. There are so many theaters in our area that have "renovated" and split their screens. Thankfully we do have many that are either unrestored and maintained...or have been restored to their period granduer.
