Wherever I am at around this time of year I have to hear this song to kick off Christmas. Always funny to me where it is I hear it first.
Was in a car this year coming from Texas back to Arkansas.

well, I usually love Celine best but on this song I really think Mariah Carey does a grand job. A bluesy bit in it that is great.
One has to be pretty bad to mess up this song.
My father died in May 1987 of lung cancer. So the Christmas of 1986 I knew he would be dead the next year. Christmas has never been the same for me since then. We also buried my MIL on Christmas Eve from a heart attack.
Every single moment of the Christmas Season I taste, hear, smell and savor with every fiber of my being. No one can ruin this time of year. No one.
This song speaks it for me.

A beautiful song (and a difficult one to sing, to boot!); and Baez does a surprisingly good rendition of it. I didn't know her Christmas album until a few years ago, and it has become a favorite. Peter Schickele (a.k.a. P.D.Q. Bach) did the arrangements, many of which are influenced by the same early early-music movement that I referenced in your Monkees posting....But, quite seriously: this is a classical song which pretty much requires a classical vocal technique for justice to be done. That's precisely how I feel about "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" in the US! My biggest regret is that the reindeer left witnesses to recant the tale...in song, no less.

I have to say, Bing Crosby always makes it Christmas for me...that's what we were always listening to when I was a kid. 'White Christmas' to 'Mele Kalikimaka'!

Bing Crosby, definitely!
A bit later on, The Lennon Sisters. Their version of Adeste Fedelis is one of my favorites. Maybe because we had their Christmas album and I heard it so many time. I used to study those red dresses they wore on the cover and just wish... sigh.

But the all time iconic holiday voice for me is...Perry Como. I remember being soooo excited when his Christmas Special would come on TV!

Bing Crosby's version of O Holy Night is the best one I've heard.

My personal favorites are O Come O Come Emanuel and God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen though. The best version of the former I've found is the one from the Peter Paul and Mary christmas album, and the latter I have yet to find a great version of.

Yes, all of those are wonderful...I think Bing just had the kind of voice that comes around once in a lifetime...and its just that much more amazing at Christmas.
