Is this a repro M-422a?

I suppose there's always the possibility that it's a remarkably well preserved original, but I'm guessing it's an unusually beat-up reproduction from which someone (for some reason) removed the spec label and removed (after adding) a squadron patch. Or maybe it's partially restored?

Is there a way to tell for sure?

Really? I thought the left pocket pen slot and USN on the rear collar (the N is very faded, but it's there) ruled out either of those, which (from what I've read) had no pen slot and only US on the collar.

Looks legit to me, but other members will know better.
I had a conversation with Ken once, he enlightened me about asymmetrical left pockets on M442a- depended on the manufacturer.
