Introducing the 'TVA'

Buckaroo Hatters aint just for cowboys anymore!

After the teaser in another thread, I could not wait any longer.

Here is a photo sent to me from 'Major' Moore.
tva1nn6.jpg

The photo of my grandfather {from around 1936, when he worked for the TVA in Alabama, hence the name of the hat}, from the shots Mike sent, I think he nailed the look and style with no more than he had to go on.

A shot of the crown, Mike and I both speculated that a diamond crease would be likely for the 1936 time frame.

And the liner.

Mike has cleaned it and it is on its way to me even as I type.
Some of the specs...100% Beaver--just a hair under six inchs [open crown]
2 3\4 inch brim-- maybe Mike can hit the specifics better than I can.
MORE PHOTOS TO FOLLOW!!

That's it, man! That is the absolute McCoy! :fedora: Exactly what Indiana Jones was after...the Holy Grail.

(I'll spare any tired jokes about a belt + suspenders. Heck fire, the man was building a dam...)

There's a hat you can wear with authority.;) The color in the photos is very nice, it has the working man's feel with a sense of dignity and strength. You will look terrific under that hat, R!

That's gotta be your widest thin-ribbon yet, RBH!:D

In all seriousness -- very cool concept and very nice execution on the lid. It will really mean something to you when you wear it, and it looks great.

Cheers,
JtL

did a wonderful job.
Mike was great to work with and really understood what I was trying to get with this hat.
The hat in the old photo has that 'everyman' type look to it.
That is what I wanted, and Mike delievered. I guess that a dress hat on the average man in the 30's took on characteristics of the region and even the man himself. I did not want a dressey looking fedora, if you can understand what I mean.

Hey Jimmy, You said what I am sure Dean was thinking. lol
I have to keep you guys guessing!

L Hatley, I believe you are right. :D

Alan, it should get here today. Cant wait!

No action will taken on your deviation from accepted standards of ribbon width in the Brotherhood, R, afterall, you're the Founder of the Brotherhood, and it is allowed for you to be, how shall we say, eclectic in your tastes.;) Hope you like your hat, Indy!

I really liked making the "TVA" hat for Rusty, the main reason was when he sent me the photo, I thought I was looking at my grand father, I have several photos of him back in the 30's looking just like Rusty's grand father.

So each day while sanding and working on the hat, I would think of my grand father and all the wonderful things he and I did, each time I touched that hat, made me think of him.

I hope each you have can understand what I mean in the above statements, we all miss those men.

Here - Here, Mike. I know exactly what you mean. :eusa_clap My grandfather ALWAYS worn a hat anytime he when outside the house. I never knew him to wear a fedora, always a cowboy hat( an Okie transplanted to California in the 30's). He worked on fruit or vegtable ranches and the wide brim served him well.

Both of mine wore hats every day, all year long, they had the work hat, the just going to town hat and the special hat that was only worn to church, or something very important, we kids could not touch that hat, all others were fair game.

Sure wish I had those hats, one passed away in 1965, and the other in 1973, I would love to have had gotten those hats, I'll ask my grandmother if she knows where she may have put those hats, I bet she kept them. She saw me about 4 months ago, and asked my mother who I was, the reason is I had stopped by and left my hat in the truck, she said in 30 plus years, she had never really seen me without a hat on. She said I remind her of my grandfather who always had a hat on.

Now that's a hat!

RBH, I know what you mean about liking "work fedoras." Something about being able to wear them with anything.

The colors you and Mike chose are terrific, at least on my monitor. Looks like an olive/browny-green with a brown ribbon (with maybe some red/purple in it?). Everything about the hat, from bash to brim-width is a keeper.

A wonderful hat, a wonderful legacy

These recent threads about grandfathers and their hats have been making me rather wistful. I never met either of my grandfathers, nor do I have any photos or stories of them as apparently they weren't in either of my parent's lives very long. My family has never been very family-oriented, unlike my wife's family.

Still, it's great reading these stories and the treasured memories. Although I don't have grandpa memories I'm busy making them for my own grandkids. Years from now they'll be talking about how "Papa" always wore a fedora whenever he went anywhere! :D

Cheers,
Tom

Seriously, RBH, that is one nice hat! With less crown height and some taper, that could just as easily be my uncle's hat from the late (Missouri) forties!...

HA! I was thinking last night of how to say exactly that with some degree of "sensitivity" :D like jimmy the lid was able to do. :p

My situation is precisely the same as yours, Tango Yankee. I did know both grandmothers -- but missed my grandfather experience entirely. I, too love everyone's pics and am living that part of my journey vicariously through other Loungers posts. :)
