Very interesting indeed! Although it was quite a stretch when he said "I want to sing it the way John Newton probably first heard it" and he launches into a large and synthy-choir rendition of it. I might challenge the validity of the claim. :) A moving clip none the less.

...If you notice..at first he was humming just the melody...and adding a few gasps to simulate,perhaps,the chant of a slave as Newton may have first heard it(speculation). Then sang the powerful completed rendition. For many of us,now,when hearing that melody...can't help but immediately add some of the lyrics. Seems to be such a good blend...that one doesn't need to hear it very many times to pick it up....
