As a reference point, there is no better example of pre-war Great Britain, than the James Herriot series, "All Creatures", which is now, a very well done multi-video program dealing with pre-war northern England before WWII. It first arrived in the U.S. in the late 70's and became a beloved program on PBS.

It's a perfect series for drawing a sense of style from pre-war Britain, to say nothing of the thrust of the series itself. Truly an absolute favorite of mine.

Love it, love it, love it, vet'n'ry!

Among many comments I could make: As nice as the second one was, I much preferred the first Helen. I LOVED the sleeveless sweaters, aka Fair Isle sweaters. Known as jumpers there, they're called lots of things here. After coveting one for decades. last year I sprang and got a brand new hand knit one. It was actually knit on the island of Barra, right next door to Fair Isle.
Learned a lot about how much time a country vet spends with his entire arm up the rectum of very large animals. What fun.
I'm always very disappointed when I try to make a reference to the show to someone who doesn't know it.

I was hooked when the show first appeared back at that time.

And yes! I totally agree that Carol Drinkwater was THE only Helen and when she was replaced after the third season I was depressed for days!
I bought the first two seasons on DVD last year and just last night I was watching the first three episodes where he arrives in Darrowby. It is just the best...

I really do like their sense of style in this period. Hard to imagine them careening about the countryside in tweed jackets, ties and dress shoes to a call, at which time they might change into a set of Wellington's (or it's pre-war equivalent) and a smock or not............and wade right in.
But it's the characters, and cast and most certainly scenes of the Dales and it's stone houses and barns that dress the stage.

I watch it not infrequently, and thought I'd post, to see who else might identify with it.

The Dales are worth visiting and walking in — and very affordable for US Loungers at present.

Start in Skipton and work your way around by car or on foot. You'll love every moment. The people are great, too.

I'll wager that the walks would be very scenic, and in fact, in the first Herriot episode, two old farmers enjoying domino's and a few pints at the "Drovers" make mention of walkers......how appropriate to your mentioning this. :)

There is an All Creatures Yahoo discussion group, from which I've learned that there is actually a recreated museum in Thirsk(?) where the series was filmed? I've seen photos of it, and there are lots of great photos of the interior for studying, and the series itself is rich with the style of that period in both its male and female characters.
