Those pronged zippers were still being made when I was a kid. I remember one on a pair of Sears "Toughskins" jeans I had.

I haven't bought a new pair of jean in a couple of years but I seem to remember that those zippers have been in use on some jeans until very recently. Of the few jean I still have at least three still have this feature and they're not older than maybe five years.
Olde Tyme advice:
Gents, get a standard wax candle; Rub it firmly up the closed zipp teeth; When jeans get washed, just re-do (Come on Chaps...am 'I' your mother now? .
