And--horror of horrors--you've got a late-twentysomething who agrees with you over here.

As for me, well, how can ya go wrong with WWII khaki? Covers everything from a twentyish 2LT on up to a sixtysomething five-star with equal style and age-appropriateness... (Fringe bennie, it also gives me a permanent pass on the "is this right for my age?" question.lol ) Of course, it doesn't work for everybody...

I might have to drop in on that thread, to see what you gals consider elegant. I see some horrid clothing choices on 40-60 y.o. women today.

A woman who looks young for her age can pull off younger clothes, but for most women, young clothing just make them look older by contrast. Remember Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

I posted these photographs of my parents in a hairdo thread showcasing my fabulous 60 year old mother and 70 year old father's retro hair styles.
I think they personify growing old gracefully and with style- the style they like!

They drive a car from 1940- but only of course, when its sunny.

My mother wears vintage hair (rolls, variations of rolls and other amazing architectural styles) and my father wears a Pomp that I think he's been wearing since was about 8. ( in the 40s!!)

I think the key is to do it with class- Although my mom, who was a model in her day- and is obviously pretty exceptional looking is an example of growing old gracefully. (no plastic surgery! just good skincare habits, staying out of the sun, no smoking, no drinking-)
I think most clothing from the 30s and 40s is very classy and appropriate for all ages.
She wears her black rayon crepe dresses all the time!!- She also wears tons of cute 40s skirt suits- like Lilli Ann style- even some with sequined appliques- these look great on anyone of any age-
though I wouldn't see her in tight sweater dresses/wiggle or clam diggers, halter dresses (shows too much of her arms)- (even though she's a size 6)

My father, still wears most of his gab/greaser shirts that he owned as a teen in the 1950s.
My mom has tried unsuccessfully to throw some of them away because they are threadbare and have holes- but you know, he's eccentric. I applaud his cuffed trousers and hush puppies- I can't decide if its more a style thing for him or he's just a cheapo who refuses to buy new clothes!

I grew up with my parents looking this way. I joke that I now have a career in vintage design/styling- because I had no choice!!!! ha. my whole house is art deco and decorated as such, the whole place is fiestaware, Life magazines from 40s, no tv- I was stuck in a time warp and as a child, sort of resented it- and them- I didn't even really "get" them until I was in my early teens and the whole early to mid 90's "swing/retro" revival was starting.
My mom usually stops traffic weather she's at Kmart or Church- I recently told her that I posted pictures of her hairstyles on Fedora Lounge, and she was really happy that, so many ladies liked her looks!

I guess you just have to do what works for you- my parents have been dressing like its 1945, for as long as I can remember- they don't really care if anyone cares- its just what they like- do you thing-

We calls 'em ancient teenagers around these parts.
Seriously, a woman I know in her late 60s used to try to dress like a 25 year old. Not exactly a pretty sight. :eusa_doh: [huh]
