Here is one for those of you over 50:

"Ode to the Red Hat" by Sue Ellen Cooper

"A poet put it very well
She said when she was older,
She wouldn't be so meek and mild
She threatened to get bolder
She'd put a red hat on her head,
and purple on her shoulder
She'd make her life a warmer place,
her golden years much golder
We read that poem, all of us,
and grasped what she is saying
We do not need to sit and knit,
although we all are graying
We think about what we can do
Our plans we have been laying
Instead of working all the time,
we'll be out somewhere playing
We take her colors to our hearts,
and then we all go shopping
For purples clothes and hats of red,
with giant brims a-flopping
We're tired of working all the time,
and staying home and mopping
We order pies and chocolate fudge,
and rich desserts with topping
We crown ourselves as duchesses
and countesses and queens
We prove that playing dress-up
isn't just for Halloween
We drape ourselves in jewels,
feathers, boas, and sateen
We see ourselves on television
and in magazines
We laugh, we cry, we hug a lot
We keep each other strong
When one of us goes out for fun,
the rest all go along
We gad about, we lunch and munch,
in one big happy throng
We've found the place where we fit in,
the place we all belong"

An old Lebanese-American cop/author who's influenced me a great deal once wrote an article on safe travel where he advocated canes as ideal for in-airport self-defense:"Mr. Atta, I'll see your box-cutter and raise you three feet of American hardwood."--Massad Ayoob

That raises an interesting point. Has anyone ever seen someone carrying a cane on an airplane? I wonder if that's even possible today.

Yes - providing it is checked and passed beforehand. 'Security' can ask for proof (e.g. a doctor's letter) that the cane is an orthopaedic aid.

Hmmm...I wonder of a blackthorn cudgel would pass? ;)

I'll bet Diamondback has one or a reasonable facsimile thereof. ;)

No apologies necessary. :)

Speaking of too old or not... I think as long as a person wears their clothes with comfort and grace we are never too old to look good.

That's what I think too, but not what most other people think nowadays. I think the fundamental question is not one of age, but of self determination. What gives other people the right to dictate (or even to comment on) what a person wears?

In three years time I will have lived in eight decades. I favour clothing from the decade of my birth (1940s) or before. I also like to wear clothes that I have owned for a long time, sometimes more than forty years. My dictum is, 'If it fits, you own it and you like it, wear it'. My preferences often draw remarks, such as, 'Should you be wearing that at your age?'

I just ignore people's comments, positive or negative. I spent the first 20 years of my life being told what to wear by old people. I'm sure not going to spend the last 20 years being told the same thing by young ones.

I make 'em as a hobby. Want me to try one on airport security?

YES Please!

And... could you post some photos? I've always wanted a balckthorn cudgel. I have no earthly need for one but I want one. :)
