Help With Sponge Rollers - Newbie!

Hey ladies!

(I am totally new here, so I apologize if there is already a thread for this!)

I am recently playing around with sponge rollers in my hair. I usually use a curling iron, but it's starting to take a toll on my hair.

I put the rollers in last night while my hair was wet and this morning the result was not cute. I tried to make sure I was rolling away from my face and with even sections but I'm obviously not doing something right.

I have shoulder length, layered hair. It's very fine and thin but it will hold a curl.

Is there a certain pattern I should be following?

You ladies have such great hair and I can only hope that one day I will master the technique.

Thanks!

Brushing a set out makes the biggest difference. I know with mine, I take a section with a wide paddle brush or one of those round brushed, and I begin to brush (using the palm of my hand) until it forms a nice wave/curl. I do this with the rest of my hair. It sometimes will seem like you are brushing longer than you feel you should!

There are some nice youtube tutorials, and other threads on here.

Also, if you're not using end papers (or in my case, little sheets of TP) you might want to consider it. With a little practice they keep everything nice and neat so the end result is smooth and uniform.

Thanks ladies! I'm going to try again tonight and I'll post some pictures. It wasn't that it was too frizzy it just looked a mess, especially by the roots. I tried brushing it out with a wide tooth comb but it just wasn't sitting right. It could have something to do with the way I made my "sections" or maybe I wasn't patient enough before washing it out.

Practice makes perfect, right? :)

For real! End papers are seriously the BEST hair-styling invention ever! OK, maybe not *ever*, but they ARE pretty rad.

Maybe it's the brush out in my case too! I did a sponge roller set two days ago, and brushed out with a comb and it was a pretty sad result. I think I get so much curl with hot rollers that the set survives the bad brush out. On to the tut to solve my problems. Thanks folks!

Question about brush outs.....

I too have super-fine and thin hair (that is also thinning, sigh) and when I have tried sponge curlers in the past and brushed them out, my hair instantly turns into a flyaway static-y mess. The more I brush, the more static-y it gets, until anything that once resembled a curl is gone and it's either frizzy beyond belief, or once again lank and limp.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? It doesn't seem to matter what kind of brush I use, i.e. modern plastic bristles or more traditional boarhound bristles, I still get the static frizz.

*edited to add: I understand that frizz will naturally be there, but is it normal for it to have so much static? The static makes it tangle so much that it's hard to keep brushing. Will using the "hand" technicque LisaFreemontStreet showed in her tutorial help with that?
