I'm torn. I prefer 1½ inch ribbon, but I'm not a fan of gray ribbons on gray hats. I'd probably go with one of the blues. I put a navy blue ribbon on my gray Biltmore.
IMO, the black, navy and steele overwhelm the hat to the point that my eyes are focused on just the ribbon and not the hat. While the pewter and sterling allows the hat itself to be noticed without hogging the limelight. Looking at the choices again I am leaning heavily towards the sterling ribbon.
I'm with the pewter or sterling crowd, but leaning a little more towards the sterling. Whichever color you choose, I'd go with the 1-1/2" width; the 2" ribbons overwhelm the crown.
It depends very much on the actual color of the ribbons. Lying on the brim they look very different from when adorning the crown. The steel looks great on the crown - but is way too baby-blue on the brim. The sterling looks great on the crown - but almost white on the brim. It's very hard, when we have 10 colors to choose from
I don't "per auto" prefer a 1-1/2" or 2" ribbon. To me it depends on the hat-profile (and probably a lot of irrational pro/contra thoughts). Maybe the profile at hand is not substantial enough to wear a 2" with grace. I would have to handle it - or see it from different angles - to be sure.
I am thinking the sterling is right. I talked to Bob Jesse. The pewter is close to the color of the hat and I wanted a little more contrast, and he tells me the sterling isn't too contrasty. He also tells me the sterling picks up the warmer color of the felt. I will get another photo when actually makes the ribbon.
