Help/Opinions needed on cabinet handles

Ok....I need opinions on kitchen cabinet handles.

I can leave them as they are, which is not an un-vintage handle seen below:

OR

I can switch them to these bakelite handles, donated to my vintage kitchen cause by the lovely Lauren.

And a close up (apologies for the blurry)

Of course....I would have to drill one hole, plug another...since the differential between the screws is smaller on the red handles.

I rent. I am willing to do this and just reverse the whole process before I leave someday..as it is I have to remove the transfers on the cabinets.

But just before I drilled the hole, I had a moment of 'does it really make it look that much more spiffy-vintage-tastic?" hesitation..

so you tell me...

Do you have anything else that *needs* to be done around the house? This seems like an optional upgrade that I might leave as is.
I would do the important stuff first and think on this a bit longer. It is not a very hard job to do but considering you will have to one day reverse the process would make me question doing it at all.

Leave it as is. It is, after all, someone else's property and you'll have to undo it later. Let the desire to use the bakelite handles be your motivation to find your first home!

The red ones are really cool. Is there any way to arrange a mix without it looking like "Neecerie got tired of drilling?"

Hehe....I am not sure...seeing as the actual handle size is different, my hands would get confused in pulling.

Obviously, not drilling tonight....there is always time to think more ;)

Both handles have a decidedly 1940s look to them. The chrome ones are exactly like the cabinet handles in my parents' kitchen when I was a kid. Their house was built in 1941.

While the red and chrome handles are somewhat more spectacular, I think I'd stick to the chrome ones, given that some day you may have to undo your work.

First off - THOSE HANDLES ARE SO COOOOOOL! Kudos to Lauren for finding them.

Okay, I like both handle style but, being a red lover, I am quite partial to the red.

Being the somewhat lazy person I am, and seeing that you would have to reverse the handle putting on, I say pack them up and save them for your forever home.

A thought

What if you pulled off the chrome handles and filled the holes.

Then scrounge around yourself for something cool-yet-leavable. Maybe some plain wooden peg handles from Home Depot. Paint them any color at all that matches your kitchen, and when you move out, forget them. Save the cool red ones for the Forever House, as Rosie smartly says. And have something also-cool in the meantime.

Lotta work. But the new handles could be had cheaply.

Of course, all this is after you finish that stripping of paint project, Missy! :)

Yeah, but . . .

Yeah, but those red handles look so good with the (very vintage) fruit decals on the cabinet fronts. Do you have enough handles to complete the job? Is there a particular cabinet section that you could use the red ones on that would not make it look stupid to have both types up? I just think the red ones could add SUCH a nice touch. And they're easy to take off if you leave that place. What does the rest of the kitchen look like? Any other red touches?

Yes... there is red in other places. Both the dish drainer and the curtains have red, my pots and pans are red. And my framed Russian food posters have red in them and are in red frames.

Yea...they are not that hard to do and then redo......Especially if I only -fill- the bigger differential hole on the front side of the cabinet... touch up with paint..and voila.

Then -if- and when I left...drill through the thin layer of spackle that covers the hole...

Either way I would only ever have to -really- fill one hole completely, and that when I left.

Yes...I have enough handles. But, I could also merely do the units at eye level that are food storage ones, and leave the cabinets by the sink untouched. That would mean only the ones with the decals have red handles...
