HELP needed on meaning of stamp on tag of G-1 jacket

TAGmilitaryjacket.jpg

really hope someone can help me with the meaning of a stamp put on the collar tag of military jackets. a picture of what i'm talking about is attached here.

the jackets involved would be military issue, not part of the original tag, but stamped on it much as WW2 A-2 jackets had 'ok' tags stamped on the lining if they passed inspection.

the picture here is of a naval deck jacket i think which i found online searching this out. mine is a schott mil issue G-1 from probably the 90s when they were a contractor. mine has the schott label and the stamp is 04.

my reason for wishing some help is that i purchased this jacket on ebay, saw the stamp picture and figured it as something military connected. when i got the jacket it had one of the front patch pockets with one side 1/4" longer than the other. the other patch pocket was also 1/4" shorter on both sides. so of 2 front patch pockets, each pocket side was 7 3/4" in height, except the one side that was 8".

i will likely return it, but wanted to know if the 04 was a grading stamp that was there to show this jacket had defects...maybe such that it rated 04 on the grading scale. or some such reason for the stamp being there.

thanks for any help with this. will be calling schott customer service tomorrow to see if they have any knowledge of this regarding how they handle 'seconds' or defects. will post if i find they have any info themselves on this. thanks again.

Well, well J Squared, I see you have made a return.

The contract number on this label dates it to 1965, not the 90s. The stamp to which you refer is probably the inspector's stamp. The jackets weren't graded; they either passed the inspector or they didn't pass. This jacket passed.

And BTW, Schott isn't forthcoming about when they had the contracts and for which jackets/coats. It may well be that they really don't know and their record keeping is subpar. It has been my experience that they can't give accurate information. PC

nice to 'see' you peacoat after all these years. the foto wasn't of the schott, but a similar sort of marking. thanks so much for clearing that up with what sounds correct to me. i scored a mil issued schott G-1 on ebay. wow, prices are going up for these things. i checked wikipedia's list of jacket contractors for G-1s and they had schott down for only one contract, in 1998 i believe. which seems right for the one i got.

otherwise, hope things are well. i've settled pretty much on sticking to a few G-1s, lost interest in the A-2s, still have some good ones to sell if anyone's interested, i'm a 46 (43-4 chest). but i do love the G-1s. bought a cockpit avenger for Christmas...which is an artificially super distressed G-1 that looks like a 50s piece colorwise, but with jacket construction could only be a late 80s-early 90s cooper. but since that's almost 40 yrs ago, the distressing looks real.

nice to hear from you peacoat, and thanks for clearing up my question so quickly! have a great New Year, as well to everyone else on this forum!

peacoat...oddly enough i found another schott G-1 exactly like mine from the 1998 contract...found it RiGHT here on the lounge after chatting with you...it was for sale by one of your famous members...it's the same size as mine, has the same slightly off kilter pocket placement as mine, and answers the collar stamp question as it has number '14' stamped in the collar where mine has 04. without the difference in stamps, i'd have thought it WAS mine. here's the link, a 2yr old thread: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/schott-g-1-46-military-issue-nice-179.95709/
