Hello all. I've been visiting the lounge for years now and finally decided to join. I love the hats and clothing of the 20s through the 40s, and some of the 50s. I love making hats, talking about hats, and helping those interested in making hats to learn how to make them. The majority of the hats I make are women hats but I also love the fedora and plan to make more of them in the future.

Tell me this then--don't you think that more men than women are wearing felt hats now, whether vintage or new; and if so, why is that true? I'm not sure there are many sales now of new felt hats for women. I see a lot of women's wool hats for sale in department stores, but felt, no. Or am I just unaware of vigorous hat-wearing on the part of women now?

I'm not much of a department store shopper, malls that is. I have noticed that the places that I visit have cut back on their hat collections. However, hats are really hot now and that is changing--more hats. I noticed that many women are wearing what is called the "fascinator." When I was young, this was called a cocktail hat. The reason behind this, I was told, is that young women want to show off their beautiful hair while wearing a hat.

Remember that certain ladies, church ladies and women abroad never stopped wearing hats. Because I'm always on hat sites, I see plenty of felt (fur felt, wool felt) hats for women, as well as men. I feel that celebrities, the movies, and retro styles have made hats for both men and women very popular again.

I've been making hats for 26 years (approximately--mostly as a hobby) and there was always a cottage millinery industry (don't forget the church ladies) that produced hats for every season. Finally, I can't ever remember purchasing wool felt materials, only fur felt. No glue not wool for me. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.
