Hey all,
I am heading to California in July for the first time since I was a early teenager. Long Beach, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are all on the bill.

Looking for stuff to do related to old Hollywood to see (if any is still left).

I am also searching for older, vintage, hotels to stay at that haven't been too screwed up by modern times.

And of course, old bars and great places to visit. I'll be in Long Beach/L.A. for 4 days and San Fran for 4.

HELP!!!!

Hi Louie,

I'm a big movie/old Hollywood buff, and there's a still ton of Hollywood-related stuff to see in LA. I've taken three week-long trips to LA in recent years, so you might find my blog posts about the two recent trips useful:

I recommend Richard Alleman's Hollywood: A Movie Lover's Guide to you. It's organized by neighborhood, and makes it easy to take in all kinds of Old Hollywood-related sites.

Of the studio tours, I recommend Warner Brothers and Paramount -- the tour of the Sony lot mentioned the glory days of MGM far too infrequently for our liking, and they were fussy about taking photos.

Skyvue,
Thanks a bunch for documenting a great trip! I also am coming out to L.A. in March and will use your guidance. I've been out there before, but never had any real time to see the sights.

Oh, you're very welcome; I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed them.

I very much urge you to see which tours the LA Conservancy is offering while you're there. My tour of the downtown theatres was one of the highlights of my first trip.

Back in Long Beach, Ca. At last!
There's also some decent shopping on the 2200 block of 4th Street in Long Beach. Several vintage stores in a row, all on the same side of the street. lots of clothing. Some of the stuff can be pricey but there are a few hidden deals, too. Make sure you check out the little antique mall there.

And if you haven't been there, go roam around Fort MacArthur in San Pedro. It's not old Hollywood in the film sense, but the fort was known for having many actors pass through there during their military service.

Enjoy your trip, and have safe travels. Trix

Thanks for the heads up on the vintage stores. ALWAYS could use some of that stuff!

Hi, you check out the site www.adsla.org. They might be hosting a get together in LA when you are here and they list some buildings of interest. I personally haven't attended an event w/ this group but plan to soon.
