Hat cleaning done right

Hello all.

I've got a new hat. The ebay ad says it needs a "light cleaning". Back when I cleaned my Stevens, I mixed up a batch of woolite and used a paint brush to apply it to the hat. I then rinsed with tap water.

Well, for the first few seconds I though dirt was running out of the hat, then I realized it was dye. I ended up taking that hat apart and turning it inside out, which solved the problem nicely.

How, oh wise fellow Fedorites, do I avoid happening again?

Sounds like the hat was "powdered "to even out the color. Cheaper hats do this to make the felt look better. I've seen the modern Stetson hats do this...
