Hat Boxes

I have just purchased off ebay two double hat cardboard hat boxes to store my hats. The two should be here by Sat or so. (both are Dobbs boxes)

This allows me to neatly and cleanly store 6 hats in an good enclosed situation.

I have three others already in the boxes they were purchased in.

This leaves three without boxes and protection.

So the question: how many have bought just empty hat boxes and maybe is there any one that sells them just by themselves with no hat? I mean, I am sure to get more hats from ebay that won't have boxes with them.

Has anyone ever gone to Optimo or anther hat seller and just asked for empty boxes?

Any ideas?

Hello Mobile; yes I've purchased just hatboxes. Just this past week I got two in the mail I had ordered from John Penman. I had been using the boxes the hats came in, they were finally coming apart, and I found very good hat boxes available from John's web site. They are very well made and sturdy, I'm sure they will be around for a very long time. I keep my Fed IV in one and my Campdraft in the other. When my other shipping boxes start to come apart, I'll gladly order from John again.

I have a Penman hat box from Sarah's and it's a really sharp looking box, and seems to be plenty tough.

I'm cheap...

I've picked up two vintage hat boxes (champ and penny's marathon) for less than $10 each. for my other I've found that the local western / country / trailer / equine store has Bailys cardboard hat boxes (large enough for western hats) for $6 each, they may not be fancy and it looks silly for a cavanaugh stingy brim to be in a box designed for a 4 - 5" brim. but hey, I have all kinds of storage in the basement!

Have I bought empty hatboxes? Oh yeah, lots and lots of 'em. I need the new generic white ones to send out hats (I buy the boxes by the case; gotta fold them into shape as I need them), and the vintage ones hold my collection of old hats and lend a decidedly vintage feel to my shop.

Those old hatboxes weren't really meant to last as long as they have, I suppose. That's among the reasons I find them so cool. I use them, for sure, but I try to take good care of them. That's not so hard, really. Just keep them out of direct sunlight and don't bang them around.

Maybe not, but you can buy those items elsewhere without looking too hard. But it's not like I can go to Target and pick up a 6-pack of cardboard hatboxes. I mean, if your average guy needs to replace a hat box, his options are very limited.

It might. How about Febreeze? That might work.

I find Fabreeze to be powerless against musty hat smell. At least, on hats. Maybe it work better on the boxes. [huh]

By "shop" I mean my workshop, a room in my home dedicated to this little enterprise. When we moved into this place, in December of last year, I thought the space would be adequate through the indefinite future. Now I'm not so sure. The shop is getting pretty darned crowded already, and there's still a couple of largish pieces of equipment I wouldn't mind having. I'm considering getting an old travel trailer on the cheap and use it as a sort of annex. Just having a place to store shipping boxes, for instance, would free up quite a bit of space.

Maybe my sniffer isn't as sensitive as some people's, but I haven't found old hatboxes to be all that funky smelling. Certainly not as musty as some low-end thrift shops I visit.
