Just picked up a Stetson Open Road 3 beaver that is in excellent condition but for the fact that John Goodman or someone similar sat on it, it's squashed flat! I'm going to try and reblock it but would starch be good idea? It's got serious rigidity problems. and the pie block has been well and truly impressed on the sides.

Time for a professional reblock as far as I am concerned.
There are those who do a great job cleaning and reshaping such a hat at home. Fedoralover comes to mind. Any ideas Fed?

I'd send it to a pro, but in the meantime I'd probably wet it down and just shape it back into an open crown to start with.

It's a 55 and doesn't actually fit me, so I'm just doing it up to a reasonable standard to bung on my stall,

In that case, shape it as best you can with steam. Steam out as much of the crushing as you can. You can use something inside the hat to push it into shape as you steam and set the shape.
