A little handkerchief story for you: When I was a little girl in the 1950's, my Mom used to put my milk money for school (eight cents!!) in the center of a pretty little floral hanky. Then she would tie it in a knot and tuck it in the front pocket of my school uniform. It looked so cute! However, on some days she probably got a little too ambitious with the knot because when they came around to collect the milk money, I was often unable to get the knot out of the hanky!! Visions of sweet chocolate milk would become only a dream as the "milk monitor" passed me by while I "fought with the knot"!

That's tragically funny and sweet. I love stories like that.

I too use hankies. I have a nice white one with tiny roses embroidered on it for casual use and several nicer ones (one green dotted one) for dress-up. I like to coordinate them with my outfits.

I keep meaning to get one of those tiny washboards that were sold for washing your "delicate items" with!

My Granny had one of those hanging in her kitchen for the longest time. I even saw her use it once, out side in the sunshine with a tub and all of her delicates. Then she'd hang them on the clothes line and sip lemonade.

Ah, the memories.

My Granny kept hankies for a time, but my brother and I were crazzzzy in church, so she switched to a packet of paper tussue. She kept them in a little tin and I remember going into her purse and getting one to wipe my nose. Also, she always had peppermints in her purse too. THAT was fun.

Well, thank you sir! I have to say that it is so pretty it just puts a smile on my face. Which brings to mind a question...
When browsing around at the various antique/vintage stores, does anyone else experience a feeling of melancholy or sadness at seeing some of the beautiful needlework or crafts just sitting there on a shelf? I think about the people who put so much time and love into them and then I just want to scoop them all up and give them a loving home.

Please don't tell me that I'm the only sap getting emotional over needlework.

I have a friend who "rescues" them from thrift stores and estate sales. That's exactly the word she uses: "rescues".

Tell her she's not alone (Let's just say I could go a looong time carrying a diff embroidered hankie each day, and I have, errr, about 20 times more hand-embroidered table/bureau runners than tables and bureaus).

I've learned its bad to read books, or ever be angry ever again. Which seems a lot to ask if you expect the marriage to last a lifetime.

okay, I thought I'd dig up this ole' hanky thread...

I have a problem with my handkerchief... in that a heap of my clothes are pocketless... and I have nowhere to keep it... especially when sitting at my desk at work or somewhere where having it in your purse would be just silly? any tips for me?

I love hankies. I use them everyday and always make sure I'm carrying one with me. I have about 20. I don't collect anything but if I did, I would collect handkerchief.

Miss_elise, I don't know if it proper but when I have no pockets or purse I slip the folded hanky into my sleeve or just in the collar of my blouse.

I actually keep a couple folded up in the desk of my drawer at work, and otherwise keep them in a side pocket of my purse.

I'm glad I'm not alone in still using them. I pulled one out this weekend when I sneezed on a date and the guy said "Why do you carry cloth napkins in your purse?" He seemed repulsed when I explained it was a handkerchief and said "You can buy little packages of Kleenex, you know. They cost, like, a dollar." I guess some people don't get it.
