After a brief discussion of the tradition of "Elevenses" in Scotrace's dinner jacket thread, it set me to wondering about other Golden Age social traditions. What were the organized social events that that filled peoples' calendars in the Golden Age, and what were the manners that such events dictated?

I think that for the upper middle class (and above), country clubs were the hub of the social scene. Dances were held every weekend; teas were held daily. One could spend the whole day golfing and playing tennis, followed by dining and dancing 'til midnight.

For those who were middle-middle class and perhaps upper working class, the Lions' Club, Kiwanis, Elks, Shriners, et cetera, offered social opportunities (lunches, picnics, dances, clubs within the club), minus golf courses and tennis courts.

The working class had workingmen's associations and unions, which were quite social. Again, dinners, dances, outings and clubs.
