The West Coast lost a fine hatter this year when Byrnie Utz closed at 1800 hours on the first of September. Always hoped they'd be around long enough for me to pick up a Borsalino, but it's (still) not in my budget yet.
Stopped by for one last visit (and saw the ghost of Elvis) on Union Avenue. Noting my wistful expression, my wife picked me up a brand-new Stratoliner in a color she likes, complete with little aeroplane charm/Monopoly piece. Yeah, yeah... they're not what they used to be, yadda, yadda. Stow it. It's a beautiful lid that feels good on my head.
It's grand and all to score a thirty-dollar beauty on Ebay, but I'll sure miss being able to go in, browse those venerable, glass-fronted oak cases, and try on 30 hats just to see what they feel like. In exchange for that privilege, I've been willing to buy a factory-new Hatco (or leftover, NIB Biltmore) from time to time.
It's been worth it. Byrnie Utz, in business constantly since 1934: RIP.
