I got it today! The book I've been trying to find for the past 7 1/2 years! I first got a peek at it in 1998 when I was getting my wedding dress made. While waiting for a fitting, Autumn at Dark Garden asked if I wanted to look through it. As soon as I got home, I went online to look for it, but sadly it was out of print and not available anywhere. I've been searching ever since. It came up on Amazon through a used book seller a few years ago, and I snapped it up only to receive a book on crafts (seller had entered the ISBN number incorrectly. ) Then at the end of December I saw that there were two copies up on ABE!! I chose one and placed my order....only to hear back from the seller that they didn't actually have it! So I placed my order with the other seller. It was confirmed...it was also coming from the UK...by ship!!! Okay...I'd waited this long, I could wait another 45 days.... Today, 80 days later (I was certain the boat had sunk!) I got my book!!! Yay!!!!! Yippee!!!!!! It's as wonderful as I remember!!
So...if you happen to come across a copy of Gardenias and Tin Hats: Forties Fashion and the New Look by Colin McDowell, snap it up!! I don't know why copies have suddenly started popping up but, I've seen two more sellers put it up on Amazon.co.uk and Alibris. Unfortunately, the price is also skyrocketing. My copy was $40...the other two are $158.00 and ?Ǭ£208.00!!! It was only printed for a short time in 1997 to coincide with an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum.
Here's a link to Bloomsbury Press with a description.
