Up for grabs is this 1950s California Sportwear civilian flight jacket in beautiful brown horsehide, including the original mouton collar. I bought this jacket from someone who told me that it had been stored in a box and forgotten by the owner for many years - and the condition of it shows. Really amazing to find this style jacket with truly limited flaws - leather is quite excellent overall, knits are immaculate, lining great, mouton collar is great. Beautiful horsehide tag.
California Sportwear has been known as a premier garment marker for over 100 years. Known for producing everything from workwear to leather garments, they boasted a vast catalogue. Their work spanned the production of high end civilian products for American citizens during the Hollywood heyday, and also proudly maintained a contract for the production of jackets for the US military. Collectors rave about the quality of California Sportwear's leather garments. I myself have two other California Sportwear jackets.
This jacket is in a wonderful brown medium weight horsehide, which contrasts beautifully with the red lining. Two-way front pockets, all pockets intact, no issues with zipper. A bit of surface wear (as pictured) and one missing snap button on the mouton collar (the collar is entirely fastenable as it, is all that can be seen on this jacket. There is a hint of a musty odor to it (as can be expected as the jacket was stored away and untouched for many years). Maybe someone else with a less sensitive nose wouldn't even notice it - I haven't tried to remove the odor myself but I have no doubt it can be removed with a bit of home care.
A pretty amazing find, considering the condition of leather, knits, and the inclusion of the original hefty mouton collar (something I have yet to see included in the sale of other jackets of this type). Really only selling this one and it doesn’t get enough wear as it should.
There is no size tag, so please refer to the measurements below (and pictured). Please allow a small degree of discrepancy due to human error.
