French Catalog Scans: Belle Jardiniere

One of my favorite French clothing catalogs from the 1930s was Belle Jardiniere. I look for copies of this catalog and also Manufrance when I have the chance in France and on ebay. I've been working on making scans of the catalogs I have and will be adding them to this thread as I make the scans and edit the pictures.

Wonderful. I really love "Golden era" French clothing. At first glance they don't seem to be overly different from their British or German counterparts, but to me they have a certain debonair aura and elegance... could be in part due the slightly more lively arrangement of figures on the illustrations.

Flo: I've looked for info on fancy backs and there are not obvious references in the descriptions. Most of the descriptions are about the material options you can order the suits and jackets in.

Good stuff, indeed. I wish these older catalogs would show stockier guys rather than tall thin ones, however. Hard to tell what would look good on me sometimes.

Interesting to see straw boaters in a number of the illustrations. I always think of boaters having gone out of fashion in the 1920s. Maybe they survived longer in France?

I am less familiar with British catalogs and films from the 1930s, but at least in US and French films and catalogs I tend to see a fair number of straw boaters (or canotier en francais) in the early 1930s for summer wear. By the 1940s they seem to be relegated to the older, plumper, rural stereotype characters.

yeah, from what I remember, a fair few boaters in British catalogues, too. My memory may be playing tricks, though.

Is this open to be a general French Clothing Catalogues thread? I have a few Manufacture Française d'Armes et Cycles Habillement pour la ville et tous les sports, and quite a few La Mode Française Officielle, which are always nice to look at.

Yes! Please do, that was one of my hopes with this thread. I was also going to scan some of my Manufrance catalogs and add them.

We actually need to expand the sticky on catalogs showing different clothing. They're always so cool to look through and use as reference.

Thanks for this lovely illustration. Looks mid-30's to me.

I adore the two zipped jackets. The pinstripe and plaid suit are fantastic as well. Could do without the first hunting suit.

I couldn't if it from the grey striped typical french workwear fabric. I think it is rather cool.
