Like many people on the Lounge, I love the look of a suit and fedora. However, my suit wearing is pretty limited these days. I DO love the way a fedora can make an everyday tee and jeans look so much more expressive.

Let's see some pics of the fedora and jeans.

I don't wear T-shirts because, well, I don't. I got nothing against 'em, just as I got nothing against short-sleeved shirts, I just don't care for how they look on me.

But I've been a regular blue jeans wearer my entire life, and I expect I will be for the remainder. So yeah, of course I wear fedoras with jeans. Most days, that's what I'm in. I'll often wear a sports jacket (more and more vintage ones are finding their way to me), and a "decent" (there's a better word, no doubt) shirt. But so long as the jeans aren't dirty or excessively worn, I think they pair up fine with fedoras. Heck, there's plenty of photographic evidence that men back in the 1930s and '40s wore fedoras along with sport coats (or orphaned suit jackets) and jeans and even bib overalls.

Aw yeah, fedora with jeans is OK in my book. Probably 3/4 of the "What Hat Are You Wearing Today" pix I've posted show me in that combo.

When the occasion arises, I'll put on something a little dressy but most days it's jeans. I only do T-shirts at night around the house or when mowing a lawn, etc. In any event, I always have a fedora on top when I go out to do anything.

Oh yeah, boy- a clean shirt, bib overalls, brogans, a suit coat and of course a fedora- that was the dressed-up look for a lot of rural American men. I bet in places probably through the early 60s.

Hi,

The wearing of a fedora is associated by many to a dressier image, complete with tie, suit, etc. I agree a hat looks great topping such an outfit. But, in the Golden age, people also wore hats with informal or work clothes, too.

Then, I think we should make some extrapolation. We are in the 21st century now, and dress uses have evolved. Informal clothes are not the same: jeans are everywhere, as are tee-shirts and cargo pocket trousers, and trainer shoes, to name but a few. And do not forget some elements are seen as multipurpose: if combined with other, dressier, elements, jeans can form part of a dressy outfit, to some extent.

Some people do not like to make the "translation", so to put it, and conserve the whole Golden Age image, or at least do not feel a hat can be used with anything else than a suit and tie. Fine. Others merge styles of old with styles of present times, and see as perfectly admissible wearing hats with less dressy outfits. Fine too.

I am for fusion of styles, mostly. At work, I wear jeans with button-up shirt, tie, and suit jacket (leaning to the sports type). My job entails office work and field work, and frequently messy or dirty environments, and jeans are practical for that, they being a sturdy and hard-wearing garment. I favour black or grey jeans over blue, but not exclusively. BTW, I am still considered the most dressy individual in the whole 80-members group. Nobody else wears a tie regularly, let alone a fedora... :D

Out of work, I often use the same, or I omit the tie. So, in the greater part of my "What hat are you wearing today" photos, I wear jeans.

Sometimes, I wear a suit, be it for some more formal occassions at work, or out of it; some days, I just feel like it.

Up to recently, if I dressed more informally, let's say jeans, trainer shoes, sweaters, short jackets, and the like, I did not wear a hat because I did not like the ensemble. But I am recently experimenting with introducing hats with some of those outfits, too, playing with flipping brims up, or wearing more informal hats like stingies or porkpies. Some combos I do not like, anyway, like t-shirts, cargo trousers and hats, but some people do, so it it works for them, fine, too.

I think this may be an evolution: once hats become ingrained in your "dress code", you feel more open to combinations.

Now, before you (rightfully) throw at me this worthlesswithoutpics I admit guilt...

This one is not new, but illustrates the point. And trust me, I am wearing jeans!

I have been experimenting with different clothing combinations to wear with my fedoras as well. I am not so keen on the jeans combo for myself, but don't think twice when I see it on someone else. I have tended to gravitate toward Dockers or pleated trousers with button front shirts or nice polo shirts paired with leather shoes for whenever I leave the house. They are also nice with wool sweaters but that combination is not often possible with our 15 minute Texas winters. If I wear my western-creased OR of course, only boots and jeans will do!

Back in the '30s and '40s, men wore hats with everything....work clothes, dress clothes, whatever. You have to remember that men often had work fedoras and dress fedoras. My grandfather's work fedora was a very beat up, lightweight, fur felt fedora without a liner. If he stepped over the threshold out the door to work on the farm, that hat went on his head. Jeans, overalls, coveralls, it didn't matter: the fedora went on his head. He also had several dress fedoras for church and funerals. I operate in pretty much the same way; I have work hats/fedoras and dress hats/fedoras. If I am out working, I have either a beat up ball cap on (that only gets worn around the farm), or an old, beat up Stetson fedora. I wouldn't think of wearing either of those into town for any reason. Now, if I have to go to town and am dressed in jeans or khakis, I will put on one of my Open Roads, Strats or one of my good fedoras. Our grandfathers didn't wait to put on a suit to have the privilege of wearing a fedora...why should we?[huh] [huh]
