Hello all,

My wife thinks my teardrop bailey black felt Fedora is "too dressy" for casual clothing. I was also wondering feather in or out. let me know your thoughts, if this subject has been addressed before I apologize but if it has please direct me the correct thread.

regards
Jake

Why not wear it with a black T-shirt? Nice theme.

The answer is - if you're comfortable in it, you'll look good in it.

And feather in, compadre. You and I can be the holdouts!

I suppose it all hinges on what you mean by "casual," Jake. Are you talkin' khakis and Oxford cloth shirts? Or do you mean denim and chambray? If it's the latter, I say go with an Open Road, or one of the myriad similar offerings from other manufacturers. Those lids look just fine with a coat and tie (provided the hat is in clean condition), but they beg to be worn with blue jeans and boots.

I like Tonyb's solution for three reasons:

1) It makes sense;

2) Everyone needs an excuse to have at least one Open Road!

3) Open Roads are among the most affordable, quality hats on the world's largest online auction site.

Pardon me for not paying more careful attention, Jake. You mentioned jeans and a T-shirt in your header. But it's Saturday evening and I'm cooking chicken and pork ribs on the barbecue and drinking beer, so that goes some ways toward explaining my sloppiness. And I'm sporting my latest Open Road-like lid. (It's a vintage custom, a rarity indeed, but more on that later.) Life is so good in America.

It's all about the attitude you have when you wear it. I'm pretty much with Marc, but I do think that even "distressed" jeans can be made dressy in certain circumstances. It's very hard to do, but it can be done. I say, why not! Do it!

Y'know, you can always go Texan and have your jeans nicely pressed. That dresses up the top, whether it's a white button-down or a t-shirt.

I don't always wear a suit with my hats.

Here's a look that you might want to try:

Black or white long sleeve shirt. Preferably a dress shirt. Untucked. A t-shirt could work, but it should be tucked in.

Jeans with black or dark shoes. I wear Lugz boots.

Leather jacket. Shirt collar should be popped over the leather jacket's collar.

Last but not least: A fedora, slightly tipped over to the side, so that it slightly covers your right eye.

It's borderline "hipster" but it works wonders for me. lol

As for the feather, I can only see myself wearing a feathered hat with a suit.

Good luck.

I Couldn't agree more. A black lid does seem to dictate a more, somewhat, formal, evening look. However, I do like to mix the two looks together. A really nice, pressed shirt and really faded jeas. Or if you really want to wear t-shirts, wear the dress shirt, unbuttoned over the T.

Just be careful. In South Florida, a black hat, white shirt, tucked in and black pants, and you'll be getting invitations to Bar Mitzvahs.

Do you have a short brim? Try snapping it up in front to make it more casal.

GBX makes a nice white on black boat shoe that would complete that look.
Log onto footlocker.com and GBX. Doc Martin and many other casual shoe makers make a white on black slip-on that's a nice modern (and comfortable)
spin on vintage shoes.

I am generally of the opinion that any dress hat in any circumstance is good, so I say wear it.
However, personally, I think that the best fedoras to go with jeans are Open Roads for that "Colorado School of Mines" look, and with a western shirt and a pair of aviators.
Here in Boston, the hipsters wear dress hats with jeans and bolwing shirts. Often, they look good.
I don't wear jeans and tend to dress up a little more, but, if I didn't, I would still wear my hats.

Does it matter?
I know folks like to talk about proper etiquette but nowadays there are no rules for hats. Wear whatever hat with whatever outfit and create your own style. I'll wear a fedora with a suit or khaki's, Teva's and a t-shirt.

There are a lot of variations on "Open Road style".

Classic style would be: Cattleman's bash crown, brim up, as per the factory.

Variation: Cattleman's bash crown, brim flipped down in front fedora style.

Second major style: Teardrop crown with pinch front, brim flipped down, full fedora style.

Variation: Teardrop crown with pinch front, brim flipped down all around, great white hunter style.

I suspect there are many other variations. It's an extremely versatile hat.

May feathers be "personalized"

With every fedora I've bought, I take the generic feather out the minute I get it. However, a friend came to a party at my house last week and brought with her a box of feathers that her family has been collecting for some time, all manner of feathers, all sorts of different birds. I picked out one cool striped brown/white one, thin/stringy and hair-like at the bottom, to go with my dark-brown Borsalino, and a couple of more colorful blue and blue/yellow, narrow feathers to go with my Beaver Brand navy fedora. I'd never thought of using feathers that someone gave me--this lady just up and brought them over without my asking. Sitting there looking at the box, I thought, how cool, feathers that have stories. I wouldn't wear feathers otherwise.

Ummmmm not in my size their not inexpensive. lol I would love to have one...but hey if I am having to pay nearly $100 for one...I'll bank that toward a custom from Art. (your milage may vary)

As to the question at hand I only wear modern metro jeans anymore and that with a ling sleave shirt untucked (the psudo-neuvoriche-euro kinda look). And a stingy actually work well with that. but hmmm...with a t-shirt? I don't go beyond a corse weave smaller brimmed (2 3/4) panama. As to the feather, I tend to wear those in stingy style hats only.

It's probably my 50's upbringing, but I CANNOT stand to wear a short with the tails out unless it's a guayabera, hawaiian shirt or other shirt designed to be worn un-tucked. If it's the latter, I usually wear a contrasting color T-shirt and wear the shirt unbuttoned.

I find leaving the tails of a button shirt hanging out very sloppy looking. I know many other differ with me, and that's fine...I'm an old fart and therefore cannot be trusted.

The MOST dorky look to my eyes is wearing a sweater over a dress/button shirt, and leaving the shirttails out. Makes me want to find a pair of scissors.

Grumble, grumble. lol
