Explain this feature

I've got a topcoat that's got hand warmer pockets that go into a pocket, or go straight through to the inside of the coat:

Has anyone ever seen this?
What's the reasoning behind it?

US military rain/topcoats had the cut through pocket at least through the
80's. I don't know if the current production models still have that feature.

The topcoat in question is a civilian coat fom the 40's. I've never seen this on a modern coat. I'm sure it's still available from better designers but I've never seen it off the rack.

I have two top coats (50's & 60's) with this feature, and my Peterman duster has it also. For reaching your inner clothes pockets without unfastening the outer.

I find it annoying when coats DON'T have this feature. It's even more handy when you want to grope for your keys or some change!

Couldn't work out why the pockets on my Burberry were reversed until now!lol :eusa_doh:
