did WWII HERSHEY BARS taste the same as they use to back in 1942?

An era passed last year when Hershey's deleted cocoa butter from some of its ancillary choco-products and substituted vegetable oils, meaning those products could no longer legally be called milk chocolate. But apparently the Hershey bar itself was not affected, nor were the Kiss or Reese's Cup.

There were, however, other changes in Hershey bar production in recent years, including the addition of something called "PGPR, an extender and emulsifier." Hershey's also has contracted out the roasting of cocoa beans and the making of chocolate liquor, both essential ingredients in the bar.

As to whether a 2009 Hershey bar tastes, feels, melts and chews exactly the same as a 1942 Hershey bar, I would think you'd need to find either a very dedicated and very elderly chocolate connaisseur or a remarkably well preserved stash of chocolate. For the latter, you might look in the permafrost under some former air base in Greenland - they found an almost-flyable P-38 there not too long ago. :D

I just called my mom and posed your question. She says there is no major difference in the way they taste or look for that matter.

Are they maade with High fructose corn surup or with sugar now? Makers claim that there is no taste difference, but fans of mexican coke (the soda) say it is a big difference. I am not a big fan of either, so I can't tell.

I agree Cokes and some candy bars taste different in Europe. I think they use a different type of sugar. My relatives who live there say likewise. On the subject of Hershey Bars. I remember back in the early 90s Hersheys brought back the Tropical Chocolate bar. This was in response to the 1st Gulf War. As WWII buffs know this was the infamous " D Ration ". I tasted one back then it was pretty nasty. I bought a bunch though for Re-enacting. The D Ration came in a Cardboard box and also as a small bar for the K-Ration. Sometimes a small fruit bar was used in the K-Ration instead of the "D". Funny thing about the K-Ration was the "Lemonade" powder (Mentioned in the movie " Battle Ground ") they would use this lemon powder to bleach wooden floors and as a Hair rinse. I wonder if that is why there are lemon cleaning products.
