Howdy all,
I'd like to try my hand at building a D-1 Mechanic jacket so I'm in the process of acquiring materials. One issue I was not anticipating was finding shearling hides in the correct color and length. So what I think I'm going to do is buy hides with natural skins and dye them myself, hoping for 1930s russet. My question is, is dying sheepskin without coloring the wool the same process as hand dying leather without the hair. I'm hoping I can rub the dye on like I would any other natural leather. Do any of you folks out there who have built or modified your own sheepskin flight togs have an tips and suggestions for the whole build process. Things to keep in mind to while dying and sewing so the process doesn't fight me?
