Last Saturday, the wife and I went to buy some hat sizing strips to deal with some slightly loose shoes she just bought. We went to Salmagundi in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston because we knew they had some. We figured that while we were there we'd just look around. We should be safe, right? We couldn't afford anything with the wife out of work, so what could it hurt? Well, the wife spotted a gorgeous summer hat up on the wall:
I took it down and she put it on; it was perfect! She never buys anything for herself but she has a birthday this week and a very promising job interview as well. I talked her into getting it (I had to invoke a husband's privilege), and as we were about to pay, I asked the proprietor, Jessen, about 8 panel linen caps. He pulled one out from a display (he remembered my size from all the other times I didn't mean to buy a hat :eusa_doh, I tried it on and it was just what I was looking for. When I took it off, I saw that I left a bunch of little hairs in it, having just gotten my hair cut. Well, I just had to buy it then! What is it about hat shops? I can't go into that place without walking out with a new hat or two. To make it even worse, he told me they now have full cleaning and blocking services. Suddenly, I'm thinking about different ribbons, changing some C-crowns to center creases and I'm sure I'll think of something else. It's a great shop, owned and run by folks who love what they do.
