County Fairs

Corn on a cob on a stick is worth packing up and going for. Watching all the 4-H'ers show their animals is another.
Good reasonably priced family fun for all.

I help every year at our County Fair judge the 4H dog agility contest. A load of fun and scored on teamwork, not the fastest time or popularity.

County Fair in France 1920's

This guy is a "Langueyeur", and I have no idea about the translation in English.

He was present in every Fair where pigs were sold.

His job was to check the tongue of the pigs. He was looking for signs of "Ladrerie" which is Pork bladder worm (Cysticercus cellulosae)...

Back home, I used to enjoy the county and especially state fairs (MO and IL).

Here in southern California though, the fair just doesn't seem right. Not much livestock, not enough craft and baking contests, no farm equipment displays, no butter cow.
That just isn't a fair to me.

I come from a big city in a rural state so I am used to getting both worlds.

I'm going to a local agricultural fair tomorrow in a small town about an hour north of here. I'll post pics if I get anything good.

The place has been hopping due to lovely weather. Such fun.
I helped the judge with the baking. Fierce competition may I say.
Someone had to do it. Yummy.

Ah, the county fair. I just went to our local county fair yesterday..>The Wilson County Fair in Tn. It has been touted as the best in the south. It is a great one...it is at the Lebanon Fairgrounds and there is a replicated village there called The Fiddler's Grove that makes the pig races, donkey rides, and 'horse-churned' ice cream extra special. The stupid carnival rides and their inevitable operator-rabble are there but fortunately they are far from the Fiddler's Grove and the Bluegrass competions, so they're easy to avoid. There is a clogging competition, amazing roasted corn on the cob, and soap-making. Also, they run the old mill three times a day, fire up the antique farm equipment, and show the benefits of alpaca farming and yarn making. Our family really looks forward to it...and i always buy at least one package of stone ground cornmeal and a homemade root beer while I'm there.

My kids seem to enjoy the rabbit and poultry tent alot and as they get older, they also enjoy seeing the prize winning fruits and vegetables. There is just a sense of 'south' at the county fair that I have difficulty putting my finger on...[huh]

Well I don't usually hit the county fairs but the state fair here in Minnesota is pretty good and what could be more vintage that walking through 4H projects, seeing princess bust carved out of butter, seed/crop art, the big pig, just to name a few delights ..... oh wait corn dogs and fried cheese curds.....

you forgot funnel cakes... the county fair in my hometown is still 25 cents to get in, I'm proud of that fact.

My classical music station here in New York, WQXR, announced this morning that the New York State Fair in Syracuse, which opens this week, will be featuring a 65 pound dragon, sculpted entirely out of New York State Cheddar cheese! Now that's worth a trip upstate any day!

I live out in the middle of the boonies but have to drive through the "big city" to get home.

I used to love going to the fair, but now the fair has become just a huge traffice jam that adds a half hour to my already long commute.

I am becoming an old fuddy duddy.
