My family will be staying in a military vacation rental cottage. On Thanksgiving day we are planning on going back to an old family tradition and eating at the Chow Hall. Anyone who has ever had Thanksgiving in the military will know how good a Thanksgiving dinner is on base. I will cook the rest of the time at the cottage, but the "soup to nuts" meal on Thanksgiving day is something I am looking forward to.

Sorry folks but I never really liked that holiday, dont care for turkey store bought or wild, just seems like a glutenous holiday.

Good point, it can just seem like a waste of time if you are not around the right people. It is really about acting as a community in preparing the feast and joining together to eat it. I have had Thanksgivings that are just not worth while and I have had some that were great. The best Thanksgivings are good because of the people rather than the food. The food is there to give you a reason to get together.

My mother has decided that after 73 years she's had enough of turkey dinners. She says this year she's going to order out a couple of pizzas, and if any of us want to join her we're welcome, but if not we can lump it. Sounds like a plan to me.

We're doing a full thanksgiving for family here. We've got everyone staying with us (2 married couples, 3 kids, and a single brother-in-law, plus my wife and I and our 2 kids) so it's going to be a full house for a week. Not to mention our dog, and another one coming along for the ride.

But as long as we have plenty of alcohol, it should go smoothly. :D

Only 6 days left! I can't believe how quickly the time goes.
This year seems low key; we're going to my sister's house with just my immediate family. A nice relaxing day with the family sounds pretty wonderful.

A waste of time describes holiday get togethers with my siblings and parents.
I'm hoping to not receive an invitation from any family member.
You should find people you like that do not want to visit their family and get together with them. Some of the best family can be the ones who are not related to you.

We're working on it. Unfortunately we've spent too many years shackled under the false notion of how close families are supposed to be. We make the effort only to see our good intentions disregarded.
I've never been treated as disrespectfully from strangers as I have from family members.
Fingers crossed I don't hear a peep from anyone this holiday season!

You might find that when everyone stops trying to force closeness you will gravitate back together. If not it doesn't sound like you will miss it much.
Just plan on being busy whenever they try to invite you.

My husband and I are kind of dealing with something similar too. His family is too far away and my family just can't behave themselves or act civilized towards either of us, particularly towards me. I've been more than generous with them in years past inviting them into my home or going to their home when they demanded it and doing all the shopping, cooking, and cleaning (happily and with no offers of help from them), only to have to deal with criticism, screaming, lies, and manipulation of the worst kind imaginable. Essentially I've given them a long rope for a number of years and they've decided to strangle me with it.

We've decided on a quiet thanksgiving with just the two of us this year in our home. We've ordered a nice small turkey and will have a relaxed holiday, same for the winter holiday. I basically have come to the conclusion that my husband is the extent of my family and that's good enough for me.

Sheeplady, our families are very similar in their dysfunctions.
After 20 years of marriage my wife is still treated like a stranger. Meanwhile the skanks my brother tries to ingratiate into the family are treated like royalty. I guess it's true that trash, like water, tend to seek it's lowest level.

I also only consider my wife and son the extent of my family. Unfortunately we sometimes get sucked into these get togethers.

I hope everyone here has as peaceful a holiday as possible!

I totally understand. It is very good of you to protect your wife and son from that. People from "normal" families don't understand how incredibly dysfunctional families can be, particularly families who have no motivation to change. It's hard sometimes when society places such a high value on family (or at least going through the motions of family) without extra regard for the fact that for some keeping their families at arms length is far healthier.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!
