Countdown To Thanksgiving

I just found out that we are going to my sister's house this year, which makes me very happy. I've got to be at work at 2am on Thanksgiving night/ Friday morning, so the more low key the day, the better!

As of now, we open at 4am. The alternative, which has not been sprung on me yet, would be to open at midnight.

From my own experience of 'Thanksgiving,' it's a really nice day to share with those you love and are important to you. It's also a time to remember those who sadly 'don't' have anyone or have the means to celebrate (and so some folk help out with charities for a few hours).

I might just have my 'own' little 'Thanksgiving' Dinner in my own quiet way and give 'thanks' to the things I do have - as many folk will reflect in similar fashion.

That's great, Paddy. We have in the past taken in some folks who didn't have a place to go, and they've had the time of their lives.

My store won't be a Black Friday "destination" store like a Macy's or Best Buy, so we'll get the crowds after they've gotten all their bargains.

I've enjoyed reading through this thread. So much that I'm getting even more excited for the big day. I think it's great that so many of us have similar traditions for Thanksgiving. For me, it's certainly a time for family (and friends) to come together and share the feast and relax, at least for those that don't have to rush to the next get-together. We have the traditional dinner with all the trimmings and just sit around talking at the table. Before dinner, and at some point after, some will watch football (not me, I’m too social and can’t sit still to watch sports) others will play cards or dice. We always remember those loved ones that are not with us anymore. We especially remember with great fondness one of my uncle’s that passed away Thanksgiving evening in 1980 and another uncle from the other side of my family that passed away the day before Thanksgiving in 2009. We’ll talk about Thanksgiving’s gone-by and things that were said and done (both funny and not so…). Of course the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade has been a tradition as long as I can remember.

Geez, this has put me in rather a sentimental mood. Time to dig out the Glenn Miller.

My wife and I were talked into going to the stores on Black Friday 5 or 6 years ago by my oldest daughter. (I have finally forgiven her). What a madhouse...never..ever again! After getting shoved..run into and over(and I was just politely standing there)..my dear wife got me out of the store before I exploded...and ended up in a 6 oclock news Walmart brawl. I have never seen such..inconsiderate..wildly hypnotized markdown tranced..shopping cart ramming...she devils..wacked out on 'sale deals' in my life. They wanted to cat fight each other over the rush and anyone in their way!
I hadn't seen anything like that since I took my 5 yr old Daughter to Target(years ago)..and stood in line outside for them to open to get her a 'Pound Puppy' (remember those?). Everyone ran past us to the puppy stack. We got there..and my little Daughter did get her stuffed puppy..until a lady halfback for the LA Rams grabbed it out of her arms...and said it was the color SHE wanted. Well..as you can imagine..ole HoosierDaddy didn't take to kindly to that. Yep..will never do anything like that again either. Crazy!

We always have to go to three separate holiday dinners (doesn't matter what holiday), my mom, my wife's parents, and my dad's (not necessarily in that order). My main preparation is to make sure my flask is filled at all times!

Both sets of parents were informed (when we got married) that we did not intend to travel for the holidays. Being a multi-hour flight away from either of the families, the idea of flying during the chaotic time of the year seemed like it could easily make holidays something to dread.

We call instead.

I hope they're not all in one day! Or else you might be crawling across the street like the Vicar of Dibley. (UK residents might get the reference, even though I live in the US, I think this was a hilarious show!)

Well we spread them out over a couple of days, but there was one year we had to do all three in one day and eat a thanksgiving feast at each house. We were so stuffed by the third dinner we were in a lot of pain!
I also like to collect flasks, so I keep several "fully charged" and I can switch off if I need to. I'm not really trying to get drunk, just a little "holiday spirit".
